Ahh… I kind of remember hearing that was the difference but I can’t remember when or from who. I do remember wanting more aggressive pickups with a good preamp. For me, if I want a more mellow tone, I figured I could just make aggressive picks more mellow by cutting certain frequencies with the onboard preamp. So far that had worked for me and I also understand that is not the best answer nor the answer for everyone.
Nice, I thought I recalled Martin saying your bass was getting the Aggies. That may have even been when and why he recommended them to me. I have a Pope pre with Seymour doubles in another bass from Martin, which I really love the tone and options of. I’m been waffling back and forth about active vs passive for this new bass. I love the simplicity of passive with just a blend and tone knob for most of my gigging, which I really reconnected with this season. OTOH I’ve been finding myself using basses with active electronics when I record. To be fair it could be the basses and not the electronics. Obviously I could go active with a passive bypass…need to make my mind up at some point
Decisions, decisions haha. I imagine you will be super happy whichever route you take! I can be very indecisive and can understand the feeling of wanting to choose the perfect combination of things. I will toss my chip to the “preamp with active/passive switch.” Most of my basses has that configuration and it works sooooo well for me. I did own a Squire P-Bass in the pass that was passive and really loved it for its tone and simplicity. Buuuuuut I don’t know if I could commit to a passive 6 string. I guess with a good preamp on the pedalboard, one could still tweak their tone if the desire came up. Anyway, happy choosing (a terrible attempt at me repurposing the phrase happy hunting
