I brought my semi hollow to a session yesterday with some amazing musicians, and they all immediately commented on how great my bass sounded. It really is the perfect bass for me. Super grateful to have it

Pretty sure they have to be exposed with the blades…HOWEVER! I’m sure Martin could make wooden covers
Wood covers would be perfect. Definitely some conversations to be had and options to explore! I'm probably a few months out, at the earliest, from getting to the pointy end of this, but I'm excited. As much as I've dreamed of a Wal for years, I think this will likely fit my needs better and will certainly be a more timely and affordable option (though not inexpensive!).
I would LOVE to play that bass. If I continue to get more non jazz work then I plan on getting a 5 from Martin…probably a P/BigRigI'm sure Carey can/will do that (edit: assuming sound isn't compromised). My red bass has a Nordstrand p pickup in a mm shell, because I'm not a fan of the mismatched look.
I seem to remember seeing pickups like the Blades where the magnets were blacked out, they might also work. I'll just have to email the folks at Nordstrand.

Yeah, it's probably the most knobs Martin has used on a bass and it was at my urging, not his own sensibilities. It's totally more than I need, but it's fun.
Yep, I kind of wish I'd thought to ask about blacked-out blades on mine, since the blade is the only non-black metal showing on the bass...

Me too, I just got a set of zen's and in retrospect, really wish I had ordered the blacked out blades. luckily im blinded by their incredible sound so its not keeping me up at night
That's not what's in Jake's bass.
I may get a Wal someday, I'm on their deposit wait list, but right now I think an Elfin semihollow is the next step for me.
Btw, got in touch with Martin, so the conversation has started. He mentioned that Bartolini might have some pickups that would work too. Aesthetically, they would work better. One of the things I like about Jake's bass visually is that it's elegant but understated, and I want that for my build.
I always felt that Delano soapbars would be wonderful for the semi hollows. I always think of them as something between a Bartolini and EMG…warm, clear, and true to the sound of the bass that they’re in
That’s the one! They come in both the Bartolini and EMG standard sizes. My very first bass from Brian Ristola was saved for me sound wise because of those pickups. Beautiful sounding pickups.
Stoked, I have an initial quote and will chat with Martin on the phone some time later today. It will be good to talk about wood choices, I was surprised that he described Jake's bass as having a little more 'bling' in the woods than he usually uses, but I'm guessing that's just the materials, not necessarily how the bass looks.
