Show Us Your Rob Allen Basses Part II

I first tried Rob's basses back in around '00. A local shop had both fretted and fretless. I think that the whole gestalt screams fretless and at the time didn't really understand why you'd want a fretted version. Same with the Lightwave basses. Flash forward to today and I "get" the fretted a little more, will likely order one, but still think that fretless is really what these basses are about.

Thanks, Todd. I've been playing around with classic Jamerson lines that would always be for a fretted bass. 'What's Going on' sounds awesome on a fretless Mb2 so I'm hoping a fretted would be even better.

ahh, now I get it - you confused me

I tried slapping (which I'm not great at) on a fretted mouse. It sounded fantastic to my ears. Not at all "modern," but instead more old school p-bass kinda vibe. With finger style, the frets just give a little more attack and definition to the note

Perfect. I guess an Mb2 would be a little more punchy? To be honest, I just don't consider any other make of bass these days.

I'm really struggling between fretted mouse and solid 4. I want a "short" 4-string and while the mouse is obvious, the solid (and actually MB-2 as well) seem like they play shorter than 34" (ie the reach to the nut is shorter due to the instrument length and bridge placement).

+1 regarding the playing short. The Solid doesn't appeal to me cosmetically as much. I love my Mouse and could be tempted by a fretted one if it's punchy enough. Save me a few dollars too

Well, I'm originally from there and I still have family there, so ....

As Ken would say, lots of IME/IMO here, but not so much with the 35" five-string. Couldn't quite find my voice on that one - not enough upright vibe on one hand, and not enough electric fretless action on the other.

This is exactly where the 2 band comes in useful for the 5/6 string MB2. You get a heck of a lot more of the low end and upright vibe to the point I want to say it's a hair more of an upright immitation than my Mouse 30.

The vintage P-Bass vibe is what I'm after. Are you familiar with Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' album? That's the feel I'd like to recreate with a RA twist. Possible with a fretted mouse? I can hear it would be with a fretted Mb2...
