I find I use the Deep 5 and Deep 4's for most everything and the Mouse just sits home feeling left out. Spent the morning playing it....blissful, but I know I'll end up using one of the others.

Do any of you serial bass owners have regrets?... I think the Mouse may haunt me?

If you still feel like selling it in 3 months then go ahead & sell it. It takes some time to detach from certain instruments, wait until you're more certain.

What aspects of the Mouse will you miss the most? And why? Having multiple similar basses of similar quality.... it's very tough deciding which ones to let go.

My criteria: weight > how often I play it (home or gig) > my attachment to it > is it replaceable.

I remember when I sold the Solid 4 ... I struggled with it. I honestly don't miss it. I'm happy with my herd at this point. Everything gets played. I don't need museum pieces that just sit at home or just look good on a wall. If another RA is speaking to you more, sell it to fund it.

In my opinion, you have the organic sound with the precision of a fretted instrument. However, the fretted are more "guitar" than stand up.

Here's my small collection. I've been thinking about selling the one on the left so I could get a fretted Mouse. It's just hard to think about parting with it because it's got such a great sound. Mostly, I play my Lull P/J because that's with the sound techs at my church prefer. So seems nuts to me to have three Rob Allens. The one on the right has a unique and bright sound and I use it only on special occasions when it's needed. The Mouse has a very warm and punchy sound… My jazz friends seem to prefer it. I don't know where I'm going with this… Just trying to sort out what to do...

I need to stop watching this thread. Now it's got me contemplating selling/trading my Mouse to get a fretless MB-2...

Kevk, that Deep 5 is gorgeous! I love Koa and that top is beautiful.

too many Rob Allens is a wonderful problem. I'm just shifting from being a insatiable collector back to keeping only the instruments I play.

Now I'd be sure to play that fretted deep 5 pictured above. I swear!!!!

This strategy allows the builder to make a decent living yet still produce brilliant work. Good for him.

This seems like a really great idea for Rob, and bass players as well. I'm guessing this will allow him to focus more on production, and buyers will be able to pick from a variety of finished basses. Sound like a win-win to me

Good for Rob, and I'm happy I've had the pleasure to own three different RAs custom made for me, one of which I still own and use all the time (my Deep 4). I think this is a good move, and I see he's also now offering more finishes and such on the Solid 4. I remember when I initially ordered mine, Rob wasn't going to do a sunburst.

I hope taking this route does well for him.

Hello Rob Allen people.
I recently joined a new band, and play upright in it (4-piece, 2 guitars, hand percussion, and me: americana, country, some blues, 50% original, 50% covers).
There are some venues where the doghouse is simply too large for the "postage stamp" we get to play in/on.
Thus, I am interested in finding a short-scale fretless bass like a Mouse for such venues.
If anyone is in the market (for selling or trading) I would be interested to converse with such a person.

Rob Allen's Mouse on my profile photo sounds just like a stand up bass. I am so very impressed with how Rob was able to get that sound and how he figured it out.

Rob made a couple of instruments with that top - amazing.

I restrung my Deep 5 34" scale E-C. Pretty spectacular sounding.

Email and ask him. It is just a hunk of wood that gets 2-sided taped to the top. The trick would be to match the top wood. I have one for buy Deep 4 sitting around somewhere but I never put it on. Kinda prefer not having it, as "naked" encourages me to move my right hand around a lot more.
