Here is my recently acquired 1974 Fender Precision Bass. It didn't come with the original chrome covers, but it obviously wore it's bridge cover for at least part of it's life. I installed a new one and I've found that I enjoy resting my hand on it when playing with a pick as I sometimes do. I decided against getting the chrome pickup cover since I generally pluck the strings over the pickup when playing fingerstyle:

I also have a Vintage '62 Jazz Bass reissue that I bought new in 1988. I never play with the covers installed, but they do look cool with the aged Lake Placid Blue finish:
