My beater bass would be my $58 pawnshop prize Hohner B2B:
Looks nice! Do you need strings with balls at each end? I once owned an eighty-something Hohner Scorpion with a Steinberger-branded tremolo. Were they owned by the same company or did they have a partnership of sorts? Anyway people here's my bass.

I think that Hohner just got the license to copy the Steinberger bass. Yea you do need strings with balls at each end.
I ave a 1/4 size upright laying around to diddle on. My 2 electric basses are both used pretty equally, so neither gets a lot of time sitting out on the stand. One or the other is sitting at school in its case. The fretless P has been seeing much more use out of the two lately though...
Update! My beater P spawned a second beater P... These two are in a constant state of ongoing modification, tinkering, experimenting etc. I leave them around the house in stands or sometimes in a chair or on a table... My wife often jokes that we should take pictures of them around the house doing random things, like sitting at the table having breakfast or together on the couch watching tv. My two boys ( 6 and 3) are constantly playing on them, plunking the strings or just doing the "big rock pose" . They take their licks but are loved, played daily, and never abused. The fretless J sees alot of action too but doesn't get left out...
I scored this Spector CRFM off of CL a few months ago, and have played it every day since I bought it. It cost less than 1/5 of what my USA Spector NS-4 did, but it plays & sounds like a million bucks.
This is my "beater" bass. Sort of.
I've only had it a few months, but it's a cheapie, so when we went on vacation last week, it's the one that went along to the beach.
At home, I've got a few more choices of what to noodle on.
My bandroom is in my basement, but alot of times I'm watching a movie or something on tv and an idea hits, so I've got my acoustic, a bass, and the piano within arms reach.
This is my basement songwriting "station". If I get something I think I can work into a song while I'm noodling, I head to the basement.
Dang shame I'm bandless right now.

I have a new "around the house" Axe. My new used bronco is a hit with my kids, it's easier for them to play, and it's living in my family room for jamming between the commercials. The jag migrates from the home office to the kids' play room to the family room for unplugged guitar hacking. Once in a while I take her down stairs to the studio and cut her loose!

Hers's my 74 Guild JS II. Whoever had it before me tried to refinish it, poorly, even sanded the logo off the headstock and replaced the bridge. But plays well, sounds good and built like a tank.
Truthfully, I find myself playing the Gibson Thunderbird SS more than anything else lately. Just hate the colour and finish on it.
