Show Your BURLS

Here is NS-5XL I bought earlier this year. Serial #098, Its the show model in the pic on the spector site, which Stuart made for himself to take to the NAMM show. This bass is light, but has an incredible B string, phenominal tone, and a great thin fast neck...I cant say enough positive things. Ill get better PICs when my camera batteries charge.

Its the second PIC down.

Here it is, and it's BEAUTIFUL! I played one of these at a shop a while back and was floored by the tone and playability. Please do post better pics.

Burls are great but, the downside is that they are just for show. The tone is not good because the burl wood is too soft sort of related to mold and rotting trees. But that is some good lookin' rotten wood.

P.S.: probably smells bad too if you take the gloss coating off pppphhheewww!!!!

WHAT!!! you put EMG's in that good looking bass, you might as well put bumper stickers on a 2007 Mercedes Benz. With a body like that you should have put Aero pickups or Nordstrand and topped it off with audereaudio electronics. What do you say? :help: :eyebrow:

Most top woods are 1/4" or under and will have no affect on your tone.

And as much as I usually don't like EMGs, I'd pick them over Aeros any day.

These are the original pickups. This bass is from the very first commercial run of Exotic Customs from Pete, and was long before his custom electronics. In fact, it is literally Exotic Custom number "1". Also, I know EMGs aren't everyone's cup of tea, but in this bass, they work well. Trust me. I've played this bass.

what burls have you been playing with??
That is not true at all your only referring to spalted maple and buckeye burl (oh yea they dont smell bad either.)

it all depends on the density of the species.

buckeye burl and redwood burl are light, as with some spalted burls. they might not have much affect on the tone but

maple burl is hard and dense.
myrtle burl is a mid density wood and has a fantastic tone, even the lightweight box elder burl has a profound effect on tone.
rosewood burls are very dense, most fruitwoods are also very dense.
amboyna, maidou, carob, lace sheoak, bubinga, burl etc etc are all very dense, dense enough to be fingerboards
and I have burls in top form that weigh more than entire instruments!

not to jump on your back or anything but that statement is very misleading

What I say is that I didn't do it, Pete Skjold did. :p Actually, I am not the biggest fan of EMGs, and my other Skjolds use Pete's proprietary pickups and preamp (say that ten times fast!), which I do prefer.

But this bass was from Pete's very first batch of instruments, and before he had developed his own electronics. And to be honest, when I first decided to buy this bass, I did plan on swapping out the pickups and preamp. But, gosh darned if they don't just sound very good in that bass, and of course slightly different from my other Skjolds. So, I've decided to stick with them, both for "historic preservation" issues, and also in the interests of diversity.

Again, not being a huge fan of EMG pickups and preamps, I am amazed at how well they sound in that particular instrument.

Tom.

[Edit: props to Vic for beating me to the punch on much of this.]
