That homebrew is really cool, Jeff! When we get together with Doug, we'll have to A/B it with my "new" one.
Thanks, you're right. I'm a sucker for mahogany. My DS-P project started out as a mule in 2005 with a $40 maple body sprayed with Krylon "oly white" that relic'd in a cool way and a MIM neck. The Dark Star became my #1 so I upgraded to the hog body, hand-tinted Warmoth neck, and the chrome control plate. This bass is the standard that all my others have to match.that home brew looks enough like a G&L L1000 to make me jealous

Anyone in the San Francisco area -- Gary Brawer (the builder Fred refers to above) does really excellent work out of his shop. Its located in the rear of Real Guitars on Lafayette street in San Francisco (near the corner of Van Ness and Market). He also has his own PLEK machine. Gary has worked on my basses for years, and I have bumped into folks like Myron Dove and Bobby Vega hanging out at his work bench.

I like that early P-bass style too ...
This is the bass that replaced the gold Lakland pictured above.
It's a Bud LeCompte creation, somewhat smaller than a 51 style and done in the classic faded Fiesta red with tort guard.

I updated my thread about this bass, but I never posted it here. It's got a 1980 Peavey T-40 neck, tuners and Bridgeplate, and a custom 2 piece mahogany body. The body and neck have been finished (refinished for the neck) in hand rubbed satin poly. The goal was to have a Decade meets WAL looking bass in Mahogany with a "p" size neck without breaking the bank. Mission accomplished.

Does anyone know the pickup mounting screws Fred uses? He mentioned to me that they are sheet metal screws. I need to replace 2 screws with longer ones due to a previous mod. Lakland sent me some but they are the standard length which are about 3/8 in length. I think I may need a 1/2 to 5/8 length. I would like to keep the bass looking "original". Fred told me he could send me some longer ones but alas...Thanks in advance for any help.
