Devil's in the details - here's where the art comes in... there is no way this level of detail can be replicated exactly. It isn't like a counterfeit $100 bill (back in the day before the new processes) - where an expert engraver could create a flawless duplicate. So it becomes the artists skilled translation after intense study of the real thing. That deftness of translation is where the rubber meets the road, and what separates a novice from a master. Frankly as much as I can aspire to be a 'master' - I haven't committed myself to that degree (yet). But, having said this, I've shown my Coral Deluxe Bass to a number of people with critical eyes, and not one of them doubted that the distressed finish wasn't original. It's only after I told them it was stripped when I got it that they took a closer look. Point being, it's not about creating a museum piece - it's about creating a 'look' that eyes accept as "what it is" to their eyes, which for most people is a beat-up finish. We all need to remember that we are geeks and most people could care less about such idiosyncratic details. As in, we do it for ourselves for our own enjoyment/satisfaction.

Upon close inspection - it's clear a few of the dings were cymbal related.

Already in, along with a set of Fender "Road worn" knobs and a set of D'Addario Chrome flats. Had to do a little work on the nut for the E string and the 2nd fret. Also fixed a small hairline crack under the G string in the fretboard in the second fret as well. Kept the original string thru bridge and tuners. Also added a thumb rest. Total investment including strings and strap, plus the original 65 I paid for the bass is now at 248. Plays, sounds,and feels awesome. I couldn't be happier with it. Might change the tuners, they have a little slack in them, but so far they hold tune really well and the bass has been gigged for a total of about 4 hours.

Something about the wear on the back strikes me as odd though on this one.
The finish is gone right up to the neck plate.
It just looks weird to me.

The plate just stopped it at that location. It's a 56yr old thinning nitro finish that was applied thin - I don't doubt its authenticity.

I’m no expert, but I say that bass was refinished at some point in history. The transition of the colours in the burst look misleading to me. And I agree with @Lowendtech about the wear in the back going up to the neckplate. 14K seems just ridiculous.

The crappy pics are of no help, but I've seen many examples of bursts similar to that one. As each one was done individually by individuals - there was lots of variation between sprayers work and even the quality of their work depending on which days of the week when spraying. 1963 was the beginning of the ramp-up years of guitar/bass production in the world and most likely things were being done pretty expediently to keep up with demand. The other thing about these finishes is that over 56 years exposer to UV rays (sun) would harshen smooth color transitions by fading-out red, one of the more 'fugitive' colours. As posted [#2152]- it is the trace/remnant of a waist-belt connection strap-unit to carry the weight of the bass off the shoulders.

Ok guys, thanks for guessing !

Here is the answer !
Both basses have nitro finish with clay dots.

The olympic white jazz is a 2007 VanZandt from Japan and has natural wear.

The sunburst jazz is a 2013 Bravewood from UK and it has been relic'ed.
