Yikes!....grab a nut file
Wow. I just discovered this thread, and have subscribed. This is the best selection of gear porn I have ever seen.

This is a rare piece of Kubicki history.
During a short roughly two week period late in 85 Phil was experimenting with different paints and processes. Well, this is one of his only screw ups.
For whatever reason the paint and primers he used cured differently and didn’t exactly work well together.
What you’re seeing is not buckle rash but flaking. At some point it went back to Phil and he shot it with a clear lacquer to seal and stop what’s happening here. This bass is one of the more extreme examples. There are very few and some may have been/ probably were refinished. Proud to own this first year production ExFactor and it’s one of my main players. Dig the grabber, i'll have to throw up some shots of mine! Here's my Grabber again, sporting a few more knocks and scratches from my most recent gigs. And that sexy BF cab as well.

Like big time - thanks for posting!I had an Ex-Factor in that colour - was it considered Sonic Blue? All the Kubicki's I had had really thick finishes - lots of grey layers and the finish layers. I stripped one once - it was a bear!
Do it!Dig the grabber, i'll have to throw up some shots of mine!
I'm a softie when it comes to distressing....
But I left my 2014 AVS Jazz in Daphne Blue in the rehearsing space for a few weeks...

From a bit further away, she still looks o.k.
The finish on these is really really thin. It showed already a bit of strong abuse, where I rest my arm when playing.
I bought her a new tortoise dress that replaces mint for a while in order to help her cope with the skin desease....

It is a heated apartment room but our vocalist forgot to set the heater higher when we did not rehearse...
Finally have a distressed finish to show off. Inspired by a prototype of a bass made for Janek Gwizdala, in less than 24 hours, I turned this bass, a greatly modded and thrashed 76 Precision body with an 83 neck, from this:

Could not be happier with how it turned out! Definitely more distressed than relic'ed, and that's what I wanted.
That's cool and has the look you were after (saw it in another thread). So is that wired v/t/v/t or is there some witchcraft going on?Finally have a distressed finish to show off. It used to be VTVT, and before that I had an EMG preamp in it when it had actives, but I'm just using the stock Geezer quick connect wiring harness. So now it's VVT with a dummy knob. That's cool and has the look you were after (saw it in another thread). So is that wired v/t/v/t or is there some witchcraft going on?
