OK, well that certainly describes my Fender. All started in 82 with a can of blue Schwinn bicycle paint, that Schaller bridge and a set of Duncan Hot Stack J pickups, soon replaced by EMG PJ's. Only original parts are the body and neck plate. None of them are cheap parts, but it's always had a ratty homemade look about it once I trashed the original finish, and especially does now."Rat rods" and "rat bikes" started out purely as tools expressly used for their purpose regardless of appearance, or at least the standardized "appearance" of a conventional car/truck or motorcycle. It also was born of gear-heads who were constantly tinkering with the vehicles, and using/driving them while doing so. So a gray primer'd fender - whatever. A front-end from another car? - sure, why not? It's the "customizer guys" (primarily guys in this case) and their "work in progress". The point where "customizer" became "rat rod" was the time it was driven/used between modifications, and finally the visual appreciation that 'insiders' started acknowledging of what these "works in progress" actually looked like. So R&R - so gnarly but tight - and with a "care less" attitude/vibe. List them under "distressed", "weathered", "work in progress" or whatever - the "look" is a big thing - and filled with so many anti-"high gloss" perfectionist wet-dreams BS aspects - create it and use it is what it shouts! Screw perfection (in the established sense) and celebrate a perfect imperfection!
OK, I'm a rat-rodder. Time to line up for my tattoo.
