theres a lot of stuff that looks like its not being talked about. refinished with an attempt to restore the finish underneath. once you wet sand off the refin, thats what the wear ends up looking like. binding pulled, looks to be reshaped and then refinished.

As I said - there's a story (behind it's present condition) and yes, there are a few things going on. Haven't seen one with a stamped colour and odd number under the pg either. "ES" maybe, but...

Cool bass. Factory refin (the punched markings under the guard - it would have the same number on the back of the neck between the 4 screw holes). Never seen just the routed end for the binding on the heel - though side dots replaced so maybe more to the story. I think Narud is right - the wear looks a lot like one that's had an additional oversprayed finish sanded off. Also the black in a lot of the side nicks would be consistent with that (assuming that's the color an overspray would have been done in).

In the context of this thread, it's nice seeing that level of player wear on an Aerodyne which is all about being shiny and perfect looking. Instead of being polished within an inch of its life - it looks played!

Exactly - the extreme distressing/player wear tapered off post nitro but when you see such wear on poly you know it's been played, not fetishized.

OK, before I start, please refrain from posting your opinion of how you feel about distressed finishes right out of the gate. I am so not interested and there are other threads to vent your opinions so please, read on and decide if you would like to contribute.

What I am simply requesting are pics of any bass or guitar that has a distressed finish. It might be your bass or a picture you might have downloaded of a distressed bass or guitar. It can be a real 'time and use' induced distressing, or your own DIY cosmetic "relic" job. I will not judge the DIY finishes and would like posters to refrain from pot-shots or boring, opinionated dissertations on "fake mojo" regarding a DIY distressed finish. I just want as many examples of distressing (real or effected) as possible. Please keep the "dis" out of distressing.

Also, I don't want pics of a Fender Road Worn bass, even if your own. I know you are proud of them and good on you, but I can find pics of those all over the web.

I'm hoping to see the spectrum of instruments that have been played hard and put away wet. The better the pics the better. For me I think about Nels Clines' beloved '59 Jazzmaster, Stevie Ray Vaughns' Strat, Billy Sheehans' "wife", and Mike Watts' EB-3 when I think of beautiful battered and bruised war-horses.

Thank you for reading and hoping you will help me investigate and celebrate the unique and ultimately personal look of instruments with distressed finishes.

I especially like the 1st one, the early '70s J. Those early poly finishes break-down in a unique way and the black pg & blocked neck sets it off dramatically. Like, deluxe - but degraded in a visually cool way.

Man, you are on dumpster pic fire!! Those first 2 Jazzes, oh man. So many beauties there. I recognized The Bouncing Souls bassist's Jazz right away. I don't remember seeing him with anything else save once or twice. The one with the binding is lovely too. And that blue P bass...ugh! I seriously just put fresh wounds on my 58 AVRI P, which had flats for a long time and was playing it and thinking how I am at such a state of happiness with my basses that I honestly couldn't think of one thing to GAS over. Absolute contentment. Then you show up with a gas can and flamethrower . Good thing im both trying to be fiscally responsible and poor.

Yeah, I do it too. Heck we aren't even practicing right now, much less playing anywhere so I just woodshed solo with the trusty headphone amp and laptop and look at internet bassporn and be socially responsible from afar.
