I just noticed the ring of 16 holes to the backside - possibly someone nailed a pad there, like on VOX basses. ???
That was pretty much my same thought. I'm sure whatever it is, this bass has an interesting history!

Crazy tort pg... replaced Dimarzio pu's... '60s threaded saddle bridge ... late '60s/'70s bound & block neck... what is it?
It's a Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt Vincent Van Trigt NAMM show 66 Heavy Relic Jazz Bass. Dark Horse posted it earlier in his last dump. So many people commented on this bass, and then it showed up in the TB classifieds. Out of my price range, but a cool bass nonetheless.

Have you seen the pick guard on the 66 Precision that's in the classifieds right now? Check this out. I've never seen a 60s tort pick guard that look quite like this. The ad does not list it as a repo so I'm assuming it's original.
Both cool, both with "meh" tort, but lovely none the less.

I totally agree - putting that weird tort pg on that bass is a crime. (the FCS one- the other if original is weird also...)
I gotta dump some off my tablet so here were some favorites...I'll ditch some more later.
