My guess is, it's from 30 years of being played by Doug Wimbish.

Actually, I know he occasionally will bend the neck for vibrato effects, and it also looks like it may have taken a hit there... the finish has obviously flexed and distorted there. Or... could be finish separation, I'm not sure of the finish(es) in use by Spector then.

Part of a distressed finish for me is studying the wear and conjecturing how it was caused. It's part of its history and can disclose some of its past.

Sometimes, how aged things became so aged can be a story as captivating as the things themselves.
To me, a "proper" relic can sometimes evoke those stories, but an actually aged thing, made so through solid use and neglectful care, potentially holds many connections, and a thing so that is also made so through the making of music always has waiting potential to discover. It may be why the instruments I own are the instruments I own.
