Even worse was a friend - not a bass player beyond spending a couple weeks trying to figure it out but a big Beatles fan. He had a very early 60's LEFT HANDED Hofner Beatle Bass he picked up in the late 70's and used mainly as a wall hanger decoration. When I was working at Real Guitars I told him several times that those were starting to really be worth something. Then saw a right handed one go to a Beatle collector for what was a lot then - early 90's (I forget how much but probably $2k-$3k at the time - there was a real premium on the early 60's ones) and saw him shortly after and told him. He sheepishly confessed that they had a garage sale about a month before and his (now ex)wife insisted that he put "that old ugly thing you never use" out - sold for $20.

No broken homes :) but I started the thread before I owned my own player distressed '66 P bass. The stars aligned when I saw it and I've been thankful ever since.
