In your opinion. It's funny how out of one side of your mouth you tell others not to speak discouragingly about the look of a bass and out of the other you say this? There were 8 other basses in that post and out of all of them you choose to say this? Surely you of all people would have heard enough negative talk about distressed basses, and out of all threads this is the last place I would expect to find it, and you the last person I would expect to say it.

I like what I like. I don't have to explain it to anybody, nor do I need anyone's approval. You know the old saying, "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all." You might take a leaf out of the old playbook. In doing so you look less the hypocrite. ;)

FTR, I always speak out of the same side of my mouth and consider anything I write before entering, my opinion. My observation was, as always, based on my impression of what I see. If I see something I really like - I will say that and since the topic of distressed finishes is in the sphere of my interest (enough to start a thread about it) I feel I can also comment if an example "gives me the willies", a playful assessment of how it made me feel. By no means was I implying that by anyone posting it (or any other example) that I hold that person responsible for my opinion, or that I am critical of the person who posted it. The people talking negatively about distressed basses you refer to (for me anyway) are unappreciative of our aesthetic interest in the genre. Aesthetic interest in anything includes objective critical analysis/critique. (at least I hope it would) It also (hopefully) includes playful comradely/banter when sharing our interest over time. When I was in art college (both. as student and later, instructor) - critiques were a gateway to a broader understanding of the art we were working on. They went deep and were many faceted - it was never enough to just say "I like it". (or conversely "I don't like it") Describing how it made one feel, breaking it down into space and form, colour or texture or size - whatever it took to get the creator of that work thinking outside of their own 'box' related their artwork. And doing so objectively - that was the part that tested our ability to remove a critical comment from a personal 'attack'.

I feel for whatever reason you are taking my comment personally and if that is the case I am sorry, even as that was not my intent - at all. But I do not appreciate being labeled a hypocrite or being shown the bass forum rules as if I am unaware - having managed this thread for nearly 7yrs I know the rules because I am a responsible OP. I feel in this case something was derailed and I'm sorry to see that happen because as OP I want to feel a kinship to those who share my interest.

JIO, I think we share a lot of the same sensibilities and appreciate many similar artistic things. I'm just telling you honestly that sometimes you come off curt and dismissive, and it leaves people feeling bruised. If you don't want to hear my honest opinion of how some of your comments feel, then ignore it. I'll take back my hypocrite comment. I appreciate your apology, but really, if this is how you want to talk to me, I'm done. Because it does feel abusive.
