Modded ebony fb - tone heaven!

FTR - this is a '60s vintage body/neck w/modded ebony fb and effected distressed finish - rings all my bells.

Here's the first one I ever built, around 1983. My buddy Lou had it for around a year and then my nephew Anthony had it for a couple of years after that, both playing the hell out if it. It's a poplar body with no finish coat to protect it, so it's soft and vulnerable to digs. The fretless neck has been on it about 2 months now, since I moved the fretted rosewood over to another body.

I've been meaning to share this for a while: 1982 Ibanez Roadstar II

Bought used by me in 1985 as my first bass
Played and gigged the hell out of it - recorded with it and was my only bass until 1992
Became a jam spot bass and was left with old band mates around 1998 who loved it and continued to jam, gig and record with it
Survived a jam spot flood and I was told it sounded even better than before

Asked for it back from my old guitar player in 2015 - and was met with complaints that now he'd have to buy a bass - but I felt 15+ years was a more than fair lending period hahaha

Don't know why the back was sprayed silver - I keep forgetting to ask - maybe to stop the paint from wearing off? Dumb@$$ should have used white

Pics with a white paint job don't do it justice - especially on the back of the neck - but here's a few anyway. All 100% real use wear and tear

Must be from the flood - paint coming completely loose from the wood like that.

Wonder if that's an MJT relic finish? Looks like the one the did for me, at least the checking. The nicks look a bit suspect - (scrapy looking)

It is sir and I wish I knew how he did the checking. But I suppose its super top secret. Looks different (and accurate) than the air blaster/hair dryer method (which isn't bad per se) but I much prefer this result.

I've always thought those Mustangs were cool looking.
Would love to own one, but finding a lefty model would both be challenging, and spendy.

I believe @jmjbassplayer pushed for a lefty model of his signature Mustang, but that has yet to come into fruition.

I get the reaction, but the lines seem to be more linear than the random direction lines of air blaster/hair dryer method and that is what has me stumped. Why would heat/cold method change the way the lines form?
