I personally take umbrage at Fender using Fender decals on most of that stuff they're selling as Fenders"They" take umbrage to the Fender DECAL on the headstock , after all: it IS technically a forgery.
I guess "they" wouldn't like this kind of thing either...

As mold is age related ... lacquer evolves in a somewhat similar fashion.

'60s Wandre Tigre Basso (made in Italy) - as Wandre was an artist, I'm sure he would have approved of the time aging of his instruments.

As there is always new tb threads that have something to do with 'distressed' or 'relic'd' finishes (real or effected) which link to my thread - I welcome those who are checking it out for the first time. I began this thread 7yrs ago and we are now at 226 pages with 4510 posts. (this one is 4511 
) Over those 7yrs we have all enjoyed a like fascination/interest with a 'un-perfect', worn finish. Many tbr's have contributed with pictures culled from the net and their own personal instruments. All are welcomed and we do not judge if the wear was yours, something you acquired, have effected yourself or had a finisher do. My threads' intent is primarily celebrating 'player/time/use worn' finishes, but again - if you are a fan of this 'look', we do not judge you as "faking" mojo (or whatever you choose to refer to it as) if you chose to attempt your own relic finish. In fact, as most of the regulars here are versed in these finishes, we can offer positive advice to help you make yours more authentic looking.
Speaking of which - by 'authentic looking', I mean the look one achieves with an effected relic-job looks real. The French word faux translates to "fake", but it does not have a negative connotation as a word - it just means not real. As with many 'faux' looks in our lives (paneling that is not wood but "looks" like wood) and more specifically in our world, a "tort" (tortoise shell) pg that approximates the stylized 'look' of "tort" even as contemporary versions are photo-screened dot-pattern reproductions of fake tort... many steps from the "real" thing. Tortoise shell is endangered and restricted from use - we all agree to accept a 'facsimile' if we like a tort pg.
Bottom line, an effected distressed/relic'd finish is purely/simply a look, like any other look. (3TSB, sparkle, metal-flake, transparent etc) It can be "heavy relic" or lightly worn or anything in between, all based on guitars/basses with actual "player worn" finishes as reference. I started this thread as a reference library of distressed finishes for my own use and for anyone on tb who is interested for purely visual enjoyment or as reference for their own forays into that 'look'. I welcome anyone who wants to know more to go through the pages to see what it's all about.
What it's NOT about is slagging these finishes real or effected. If you visit this thread and do not agree with it - please move on. The tb mods are on my side here and will not tolerate trolls or attack posts because an individual doesn't think our focus here is legit. This thread is for those who appreciate the concept in all its forms and I am vigilant to keep it that way. I don't want to come off as militant - I only preface this because it is a constantly attacked focus that comes up every time here is a thread that touches on it. Just be clear that this is not the thread for that.

I look through "vintage basses" on eBay and Reverb every now and then and find great examples to post here, own a wonderfully 'player worn' '66 P-bass, and have done many relic'd finishes myself on mine and clients basses/guitars. So I have-a-dog-in-the-fight as is said! It's not going away - in fact, the more open minded you are the more there is to experience!

Yes he was a motorcycle repair-guy and fabricated his own custom parts for motorcycles and guitars/basses. Most had aluminum necks or aluminum and wood necks/hs's.
That's a great example of the coats required to build the perfect CAR finish right there. Lovely.

Oh Wandre is a fave of mine - some truly amazing creative work! It's considered art by most collectors and the prices reflect that. I hope to own one someday but most likely I'll appreciate clear photo's of them!
