Recently came across this Ibanez SR505....

'64 Burns of London Bison bass. Having read some BoL history, they had problems with their early poly finishes and the way the paint is coming off in pieces so cleanly is a possible indication of this. Similar to issues with '70s CBS/Fender poly finishes. There were later re-issues of the Bison, but an original like this one is the bomb.

The finish on those brown 505's is the most fragile thing on earth. Every used one has chips all over. Even mine bought new from the GC had wear starting when I bought and was actually the less worn of the 2 they had in stock. It's great if you want a naturally heavy relic'd bass after a few years

Nice - thanks for posting! The BoL Vista Sonic morphed into the BoL/Baldwin Jazz Bass. Body shape was different but everything else was the same. I completely renovated my '63 VS as it was a basket-case when I got it, so it doesn't fit in a "distressed finishes" thread... but, being my thread.... I'll look the other way! (love my Vista Sonic!)

I chose the trans-red finish (Pat Wilkins) to allude to a prototype made around the same time. In the pic, it looks more 'orange' or Fiesta red, but as you can see the front poly-red dramatically faded. The back in bright sunlight is redder - more like when new. I've seen versions that are more red-red than or orange-red. Red is what's considered a "fugitive colour" - UV rays will bleach it quickly if exposed to sunlight.

You can see the body difference - Jim Burns was a force of nature and kept changing designs. JB was pretty much the antithesis of Leo Fender - but both were brothers of guitar/bass innovation.

How cool is a bass whammy-bar... in the early '60s!

Super cool! Thanks for posting! I used a wah (Crybaby) for years in a more avaunt guard/outside collective, but not much these days. Still incorporate fuzz for sure! (MXR Bass Fuzz Deluxe)

I've owned a couple wah's - this is the only one I have now with (red) boost and 3 band tone/frequency pot/knob (mine has a rubber "knob" so you can dial w/your shoe) Pretty effective effect!

But aesthetically - this one (which is similar in appearance to the Bruno) is Museum of Modern Art!​

The Bruno is lotza fun on a Bass VI at home but if I needed a fuzz for bass with the band I'd definitely something smaller. It's about as big as my whole gigging bass pedalboard. I should polish it up like the one in your photo

Yep - a very different way of going about this. The hs is solid rosewood like the fb and has a shallow tilt. (no string tree) Interestingly enough, the late '60s Coral Deluxe Bass was a clone of the early '60s Dano Dane bass, but it had a straight, one piece neck/hs and string tree.
