Old black over mocha refin on my 77 Jazz
Not reliced, just old and worn in.
I like not having to worry about dinging it.

People commonly call them all kinds of things. But the official name was simply "Les Paul Bass." Later models were known as the "Triumph."

They do tend to be boat anchors, which is why (I suspect) folks stay away from them. But mine is a particularly light example. That's the main reason I bought it.

Sadly, I'm forced to sell it. Paid too much for the '66 Jazz posted above and need to recover some funds. It's on consignment at Ludlow Guitars in lower Manhattan.

What I am simply requesting are pics of any bass or guitar that has a distressed finish. It might be your bass or a picture you might have downloaded of a distressed bass or guitar. It can be a real 'time and use' induced distressing, or your own DIY cosmetic "relic" job. I will not judge the DIY finishes and would like posters to refrain from pot-shots or boring, opinionated dissertations on "fake mojo" regarding a DIY distressed finish. I just want as many examples of distressing (real or effected) as possible. Please keep the "dis" out of distressing.

Also, I don't want pics of a Fender Road Worn bass, even if your own. I know you are proud of them and good on you, but I can find pics of those all over the web.

I'm hoping to see the spectrum of instruments that have been played hard and put away wet. The better the pics the better. For me I think about Nels Clines' beloved '59 Jazzmaster, Stevie Ray Vaughns' Strat, Billy Sheehans' "wife", and Mike Watts' EB-3 when I think of beautiful battered and bruised war-horses.

Thank you for reading and hoping you will help me investigate and celebrate the unique and ultimately personal look of instruments with distressed finishes.

I think it was Nels Cline's '59 Jazzmaster (bought from Mike Watt in '95) that really got me interested in these beautiful workhorses. I was aware of Jaco's BoD and Stevie Ray's examples, but seeing/hearing Nels many times over the years and seeing how he plays really illustrated why his guitar looks the way it does.

I was thinking about one of my favorite distressed basses today, and thought I must post some pictures of it!

"'72 P-Bass (pictured below) that Norman famously used on all of his celebrated recordings with Ian Dury & The Blockheads. Spotted in the window of a Fulham music shop in 1972 by Norman's flat mate, Average White Band guitarist, Onnie McIntyre, Norman immediately snapped the instrument up, with his wife pitching in to help the then-impoverished bassman meet the £160 price tag...

Duly christened “Paddy” and tricked out with a Jazz pickup in the bridge position and the removal of the stock scratchplate for a smaller, brass unit mounted with an additional volume control, the bass became Norman's main instrument for the next 13 years, featuring on the hit singles "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll", "Wake Up & Make Love To Me", "Reasons To be Cheerful" and, of course, "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick"."- BassCentre

From a current eBay auction (no affiliation) - it's an '89 FCS Kubicki Factor. They state it's Sea Foam Green, but I had one like it and it's Sonic Blue - you can see its true shade in the second layer under the clear-coat. I also stripped a Factor and will attest to the thick 'shell' of a coating it had. And I had a FCS black one that had been factory re-coated over red like this one.
