Or just standard. An instrument with a lifetime of being played has physically adapted to being played including vibrations through the organic structure (wood) and the electronics (pu/pots) have also been attuned to having electricity running through the coils for years.

This '60 looks a bit like Bobby Vega's "shark bass" (the patina anyway...)
Steve Wariner's 1962 Jazz Bass - given to him in 1973 by his uncle, Jimmy Wariner, when Steve was offered a job playing bass for Dottie West.
Mike Watt with his non-reverse Gibson Thunderbird. He is best known for co-founding the rock bands Minutemen, Dos, and Firehose; as of 2003, he is also the bassist for the reunited Stooges and a member of the art rock/jazz/punk/improv group Banyan as well as many other post-Minutemen projects.

Well, you've thrown down 3 names I need to look up (Steve Wariner, uncle Jimmy and Dottie West (country singer?)
As for the Watt - saw him twice (w/MissingMen, SecondMen) last year here in Pacifica and I also did a replica of his stolen EB bass that hangs in the bar here (Winters Tavern) that he played in. If anyone can abuse a basses while performing - it's Mike Watt. He has a very 'physical' relationship with his basses.
This is one of his latest projects reuniting with (my all time hands down favorite guitarist out there) Nels Cline and the drummer from Deerhoof (the singer I'm not familiar with). Note he's holding what appears to be an early '66 dot/bound Oly white J... will hope to see this band rock in SF eventually. Oh.., and another Nels/Watt project from the past worth checking out is Steven Perkins (drummer) "Banyon" - they did a few CD's in the early 2000's. Saw them a few times back then - Nels and Watt together are.., or as Nels sez it in this article; "It's sick. It has an extreme quality and kicks ass."

no joke - I've seen/heard Nels many times over many years but once with Banyon (probably the same song), and with Watt goading him on - he went deeper than I had ever experienced - he was on the floor manically pushing pedals making the most insane hellish gut-wrenching extrapolation I was seriously concerned if he was going to make it back out! Talk about exhausting his demons! (thank god he has such a direct and for us AWESOME vent!) I was probably at this show as they played here a few times at different venues. Now that I checked youtube, yes - I was at that 12 Galaxies show. People near where I was standing were actually attempting to have stupid conversation over it! I moved closer to the stage so they were drowned out.

My pristine 64 AVRI Jazz took a header off one stand and into another stand. Now it and I are both officially distressed.
