It's more likely a "fauxburst", not oly white (the pics are pretty low res, so hard to see it clearly). But in the mid/late '60s, Fender did some sunburst finishes where they actually painted fake wood grain lines over a whitish base coat, then sprayed the sunburst over it. The point if it was so they could still use bodies that didn't have very attractive wood grains for sunbursts. I've sold 2 of these fauxbursts and seen a handful of others. They're pretty cool and unique.

Not much,but this was caused by the pickup-cover. Its an AV 58P Bass- the laquer on the pickguard cracked and sort of spread. I hated it first, but OK now :)

Did Fender always laquer their anodized pickguards? Or is that new?

New to the reissues IIRC. The AVRI '57s didn't have lacquered anodized pickguards. Actual 1957, 1958 & 1959 basses with anodized pickguards were lacquered. You'll often see the old gold pickguards worn down to the grey metal stuff.

You should also post more pictures of that bass :)

Cool! Always good with new info:) So, if i got this right, the original 57-58 and 59 had their pickguard laquered? ( too tired :P )

This beauty sat me back alot, but heck - it was worth it. Had it for 3 months now, already starting to age. You know, the clusters of scratches, a dent, etc etc :)

Yes the original had lacquered pickguards. Love those gold pickguards with the maple necks.

I've had my eye out for a vintage spec P bass and the '58 has caught my eye, but every picture I've seen makes the sunburst look so washed out and that like it doesn't have much red in it like actual '58-'59 basses.

Thank you for that information regarding laquered pickguards :) Ohh, indeed, the combo of maple and anodized aluminium is superb.

Sadly yes, mine is the same way - minor red color.. its more of a two tone color.

Another 58- and almost all laquer has been worn off.

Not the best image, but you can see where the laquer on the pickguard is wearing off. Around where my tumb is, and the other is where my pick has struck a few times.
