Show your "Funk Machine"

I visited a music store specialising in used gear yesterday, between meetings, on a business trip. What do i see - a newly traded Fender Jazz American standard. I ran over and carefully lifted her from the rack. At this time, randomly, some strangers are arranging a 12 bar blues jam in the store to test a drum kit and a guitar, they shout over to me to join them on the bass... 30mins of solid jamming followed - I could not help myself. I started a negotiation with the shop owner, arranged a trade in price on one of my acoustic guitars and worked on a special price for this bass. Today i gave this beautiful funk machine orphan a new loving home. I will have to share my time between these two kids now (the scary part of this is that i got the Sr5005 last month and i had some anxiety about what i will say to my wife) - I sent her a pic to break the news and she responded as pictured - i just know that she has an extra card to play now...

You might want to bring her flowers when you get home.

My California Series P Bass Special.
Changed my life 20 years ago.
Could not believe how good it sounded.
Still amazed

1968 Fender P-Bass, (w/ DR Fatbeams 45-105).
My old lady is showing her age, just like me... But she plays & sounds great - with just about any style of music.

James Jamerson only used his index finger ('the hook') to pluck, and said that the chrome pickup & bridge covers also contributed to his sound. Check out his sublime playing on Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' = pure genius;

Did he use mutes? Or is there something about the covers themselves?

The Fender Precision Bass came stock with a piece of adhesive foam (actually open-cell neoprene) pressed against the strings under the chrome bridge cover. Many people removed the cover, but James Jamerson left it in place and it was part of his sound. Here's the cover and mute from my 1974 Precision Bass along with a new mute that I purchased from Fender:

I posted this earlier, but since we're seeing so many cool variations on the theme, here's my other funk machine. Initially, Toluca Blue, this SBMM ray24ca went almost directly from store to luthier for a makeover, both in body and engine. PG switched with my other ray24ca, preamp is a 3-band Seymour Duncan STC3M3 (with pull-push modifiable slap tone), pick-up an SD Alnico V. Also has a Hipshot Bass XTender. Hot$hit funky.

Born in Fullerton sometime in '59/'60 All original except the volume pot which I wore out, the bridge which I wore out, and the body finish which I wore off. Purchased at Jim's House of Guitars in San Diego in '78. The only bass I'd never sell...
