It really depends on the instrument for me. My primary fretless is a single pickup instrument and it SLAYS!!
Hey Bryan,
Here are the basics:
- Alder body
- Birdseye maple top, fretboard and headstock cap
- Maple/purpleheart neck
- 34" scale, 25 frets
- Single passive custom Nordstrand Fat Stack
- Controls limited to standby ('kill') switch & coil tap
I decided on a single pickup at the time because I wanted simplicity. For the sake of a useable sound (in a band setting) I would definitely go with a 2 pickup layout if I was having it made today. That's why the new 10 they made me has a set of custom Big Singles.
And Zack, the bass is tuned in fourths like so:
- Low F#, B, E, A, D, G, C, F (natural)

This does not help the major 51-P gas I'm suffering.Here's my Turser JTB-401 with a chrome racing stripe added a'la the Fender Mustang. Auto striping tape is not hard to work with!
When I swapped to Ultralights, and a Hipshot A on my Explorer, rather than Fender stuff, it made a *huge* difference, thing dived like hell, and now balances fantastic.
They are a very, very good mod.
I can tell you now, I've tried most every style of bridge, and the Hipshot A is the best.

Tuners from MIA, Gotoh 201 for the Squier, and possibly a maple neck. I love the rosewood, but Im a maple cat at heart.
