Trying to move away from racks. I have 2 Presonus Studiolive Mixers, a 16.4.2 and a 16.0.2. When I use my 24 channel soundcraft I use a rack that has a DBX 2231 graphic EQ, a Lexicon MX200 effects processor and a DBX 166 compressor. I have 12 powered speakers that I can use depending on the gig. Two EAW NT59 tops, 2 EAW NTS22 subs, 2 QSC HPR151 subs, a pair of JBL PRX 535 three ways and 4 PRX512ms that can be used for monitors or tops.

This was the FOH rack for a little club PA I used to run.

top to bottom:

- 2 Orban 622B dual channel parametric EQ
- 2 dbx 166A dual channel comp/limiter/gates
- dbx 166 dual channel comp/limiter/gate
- patch bay for all the above stuff, including normaled sidechain inputs for the comps
- old Korg spring reverb
- Peavey digital verb/delay unit
- dbx Driverack PX for FOH
- 2 dbx 231 EQs, one channel for each monitor mix

Let's see... Pic of rack... See the GFs. After buying a Studio Live 16.4.2 board, each of the 16 channels has a gate, a compressor, a 4 band semi parametric, 6 aux sends, 2 effects sends. Each Aux/Mon mix has a 31 band EQ pluas rhe same gate, compressor and 4 band EQ as the channels. 31 band on the mins of course, 2 effect engines on board... built into the board.

And after migrating from QsC power amps to QSC powered speaks and sub, no power rack...

I seriously don't miss the extra racks and interconnect cables I used to carry nor the additional setup time either...

Wayne, do you still use this setup live?


I've been working towards a very similar setup, only instead of the Galaxy monitor, I'm using a separate mixer to wired IEMs. Same concept though.

Still working out the specifics, such as my limiter settings on my IEM output, and still tweaking the EQ (I've got my own PA, so I'm optimizing my tone for that system for now, I know it's relative).

Any tips on stuff to pay special attention to when setting all this up?

I'm on the same page only using JBL PRX 3-way tops and the big PRX subs. I am also a professional audio video installation designer and general manager and I would never gig with any other type of set up again. We do have a small 8space below our 16.4.2 in its Odyssey rack to hold our six IEM transmitters, But no more 12awg speaker snakes......just nice lightweight mic cords. And we all use iPad's to mix our own buds, no real....racks per se. Setup is so much quicker, the sound is so much more consistent as well.

I'm obviously not suggesting the Stones tour with this rig, but for the non metal/hip hop bands out there, it is a seriously easier way to be able to pull off doing club work and not pay a production company more than the club is paying you.

We also have a nasty bunch of Audio-Technica wireless headworn systems, but don't even get me started on wireless microphones :scowl:

Ninja edit: I suppose I should mention that I do not really like this system. It's a bit Frankenstein-ish, and doesn't work as well as I'd like.

They are a good, transparent EQ. I use them when I need to do very deep, very narrow cuts without screwing up the sound of stuff in the pass band. Also great as notch filters if a singer needs ludicrous amounts of monitor.

It's actually a pretty simple FOH rack though a bit dated. Ive been using this rack virtually unchanged for 10+ years. I used a section of a 24 ch snake cable and hardwired the back so the connection to the console is very quick and easy.
ARX sixgate - six individual drum gates in one rack space.
ARX quadcomp - four individual compressors (I usually
use them for vocals)
dbx 160 - single channel compressor I use on the mains
Ashly eq - 31 band eq I use on the mains
Yamaha REV 500 - fairly simple and inexpensive reverb unit
I use it on vocals usually
Yamaha SPX 90 - I use it for reverb on drums
t.c. electronics D-two - Delay unit, I usually use a really short
delay w/this unit to fatten up vocals,
although it does have many features.
Effectron ADM1024 - Vintage 80's delay very fun and easy to
use.

Digitech Studio Quad V2. Like having 4 fx units in 1
DBX 31 band stereo EQ: channel one setup for monitors
Crown XLS 1500 for Monitors( Yamaha Club Series)

FOH Amps:

DBX Crossover
Crown XTI 1000 For Highs (JBL JRX100 series 115 tops)
Crown XTI 2000 For Subs (Yorkville 808S)

All setup for an outdoor gig:
