The rig of shame thread. Things that any self respecting bass player would throw away, walk away from, or refuse as a gift, but they work perfectly well.

I will start.

I'll start with the rig of shame. The Unholy Trinity (of which I am not ashamed) posing in front of the guilty party - a Marshall G100RCD head. A head so bad that even guitarists hated it.

I love it. Absolutely love it. I get great sounds out of it, and before you say "but that's a guitar head and you're playing bass thru it!", I have two words for you. Jack, and Bruce.

To further compound, and cement, its place in the hall of all time TB shame I have paired it with 12" full range PA cabs which you can buy from Amazon for $200.

It should sound absolutely horrible, but it doesn't. Plus, I have the footswitch option to go dirty if I want to.

It gets no less shameful when you look at the FX loop. I call it the P-A-R-T-Y loop. Y? Because I gotta.

There's not even the price of a boutique 1/4" cable there. Shameful. But it works.

Don't have a rig like this but in the late 90's I got roped into playing bass for a bluesjam, and was assured there was a good bass rig to play thru.



It was one of these

into an old Crate 115 PA speaker.


It sounded great.

Amusing aside: I had a High School friend, called, Rob, and we rather meanly called him "Boring Bob" because, well, you know. I don't wanna be mean.

Anyway, he rocked up one day and was like, "I bought me a new amp from a pawn shop. It's a Pervey!"

I've not been able to look a Peavey in the eye ever since.

I thought it was "Penley" when I first started reading guitar magazines (RIP, GFTPM) in the early '80s.

To be fair, the logo WAS created by a high-schooler (and it looks like it).

I keep this at our practice bunker so I'm not dragging stuff around. The "Pervey" Mark VIII is o.l.d. old. It has a shipping barcode from the Mayflower on it and there's only like 3 stripes. Won't die. I've had it for years. Lived under the bed for some years along the way. The cab is an old Pervey TVX with the crossover ripped out and a chunk of sheet metal screwed over the gaping hole with a jack in it. There has to be 1 or 2 dead bodies in it...or perhaps 4 or 5 T-40s, but you will herniate a bunch of disks in your spine if you look at it for more than a few seconds. Indestructible, sounds good, and too heavy to move without a crane. Extra shame for pedals flopping around in a granny knot pile.

After studying these heads a bit online, they'd be a great budget backup or practice space head. 9 band eq.

I once played a gig that was 4 hours from home. Unpacked, set up, turned on my amp and...nothing.

We ended up running my bass over about a 30' cable run (which included a ¹/4" coupler) and going straight into the unmanned, powered PA mixer.

It sounded killer.

Apologies up front for temporarily derailing, but that must be the most sparkly P-Bass I’ve ever seen! RAD.
Now returning to reading about cr@ptacular rigs of doom.

No pics but I used a budget low-wattage Crate 1x12 solid state guitar combo with a JBL 15" extension cab on a gig, with a 60's Dano Longhorn. The amp was dimed. The whole thing sounded like it was going into failure mode. Sounded....strangely cool. One audience member commented it sounded like Jack Casady, and another said it was the worst bass sound he'd ever heard.

Church basement, early-70s, P-bass (new shiny one, borrowed from school) through the tube audio section of a (16mm?) film projector, complete with its open-back 12" speaker. Kept up just fine with loud drums, 2 electric guitars and a piano with a mic on it. Sounded pretty AWESOME... I actually have a recording of it somewhere

This is a great thread. I’m totally ashamed I don’t have much to add, but I did have a Pervey Mark IV, the one with the built in cross over EQd with the flying geese setting. I set the cross over at 250hz and ran that into a 15 watt Dean Markly guitar amp so I could her what notes I was plying. Does that count?
