1970's~1984(one half of rig, duplicate on other side of drummer):

Wait...you used two SVTs and two 371s or was it one SVT head with two 8x10s and one 370 head with two 301s? Either way
Both were THE rigs to have back when I started playing (1974). For me, it was a religious experience the first time I walked into Bay Music in Saginaw, MI and came face to face with a real 371 (and a full Marshall stack), and then heading over to The Music Center in Bay City, MI to see their room full of Ampegs... I can even remember the smell!!!
No matter,...back then, there was no such thing as sound reinforcement. Bassists had to do all they could to be heard. Listen to Grand Funk Railroad/ Mel Shacher(sp?) had one of the most insane set ups for the day and his Fender Jazz came across as nothing more than a guitars low E on fuzz. No new news that it takes major power to move air at low freq. Folded horns were the best option available with Sunn and Acoustic pioneering the way. Ported cabs can atriibute their sucesss from these early designs.
SVT's haven't really changed much, they are loud and awful sounding, but a bass could be heard. The 360's preceded the 371's and were the rigs that all others were judged by. A 360 head was nothing more than a pre amp with the cabs retaining all of the power. Quite forward thinking and ahead of their time if you think about it...a powered cabinet....hmmmm.
Loud is good......but clean is beautiful.
Anyway, these days are supposed to be about tone and using the house system to power your expressions.

I respect your percetion of how an SVT sounds to you, but when I listen to my Allen Woody era Gov't Mule CDs I stand in awe of "that" tone...
As far as I can tell, gear back in the '70s was insanely expensive by today's standards. An Acoustic 371 (370 head with one 301) would list for between $5500 and $6000 today. Add another 301 and an SVT with two 8x10s (the required configuration back then due to the limited power handling of the cabinet) and the bassist would have $15,000 (in today's Dollars) worth of amplification on stage. Today, I think only Tom Bowlus could pull that off!
For distorted, stoner (and/or grindcore) goodness. The guitar cabinets are for varying levels of distortion/OD, and the bass cabinet remains clean most of the time.
I'm probably going to load the Ampeg cab with Eminence Swamp Thangs after Christmas.

Putting on my day-gig safety engineer hat for a moment...I sincerely hope that you don't light the candles (those are candles, right?) and leave them on top of your amp, especially with the drapes so close by...
A lot of guys don't like Carvin Cabinets. But for the price, I think they can't be beat. Especially if you got them on sale like I did, just be fore they were discontinued. With my old Ampeg SVT 200T, they sounded OK. With the SVT 2-Pro, they sound absolutely AMAZING! My 4 walls never reverberated like they do now.
The candles, are actually mounted on the wall benhind the amp. I never light them anyway...too close to the wall. They're there just for ornamentation. The pic makes it look like they're on the amp.

Yeah, it is LOUD! I don't know why people say it isn't loud but to me, it is. Just hook it up with a really efficient cab (and I don't mean 2x10 or so..) and you won't have any problems with keeping up with the rest of the band.
Our guitarist has an Line6 HD stack - 300watt SS head with 412 cab (celestion vintage 30) and on our last gig he had his master on 7 and his gain on 9 I think. -this amp goes loud enough to fill a medium size venue (aprox. 150-300 ppl)- and I had my ampeg on Gain 6, Master 4
Drumboy was mic'ed a bit to keep up with the amps.. 
Btw, if you read the v4bh posts on talkbass, you'll notice that alot of users hook it up with a 212 or 115 cab and start to complain that it doesn't keep up with their guitarist' Mesa 50/50 with 412...

Peavey VTM 120 on top of a Music Man 115RH cab (1 EVM 15L) on top of a Sunn 2000s 215 cab with two EVM 15Bs
And the bottom:
I really like having the MM cab on top, as it provides a great midrangey monitor while the Sunn on bottom gives more thump. From up close I can hear the finger noise on my strings painfully loudly, but step a few feet away and the treble returns to a normal level. Good for cleaning up my technique, at least.

One 370 head > 301 cab my side, CerwinVega B36(baby earthquake..the fiberglassed one) one other side.
Drummer's monitor went on the B36 and later a keyboard monitor facing forward. It was fun and sounded/FELT wonderful but my back/road crews' backs don't miss 'em. The ACME's are giving me the same LOW end the 301 did....just dang....been so LONG since I heard that. They won't produce nosebleeds on the 20th row like the 301 did....let FOH do the work for that.

yeah, they sound great.
I got them both just before they were discontinued. The 4x10 was first, then the 1x15. I like the way these look over the new BR series
