We are professional people, nearing retirement age, who have always wanted a dog but were never home enough to raise one properly. Covid changed all that, and today we are virtually never anywhere else but at home. And so, we now have a dog. Meet Shortcake, a 5 month-old heeler mix rescue dog. She is a little skittish about men, but she is definitely warming up to me now. We got her on Saturday. We are very pleased. She is a good dog and, apparently, at least as smart as her owners.

Hooray for her...and for you! I have 3 rescues. I'd have more if I could. Dogs are EXCELLENT for exercise! My 14 year old poodle/jack russell still drags me, and the other 2 puppers, on multi-mile walks through the forest. We've walked thousands of miles together. What a good friend he's been!

I'm knocking down the bricks, one by one...working on the wall that my loving Bride has erected to keep a new dog away.

At least, now we can talk about it...:)

We are retired, and Love our camper; whether it's 20 minutes away, by the lake, or across the Great Divide (2x).

Seems I've convinced he that the (once & future) dog could ride along, inside the truck with us when we pull the camper.

Now I have to convince her that my beat up feet (plantar fasciitis &, and, AND peripheral neuropathy...yeah, it's a party!) will allow me to walk her? daily.

That's the next brick...;)

It would Have to be a rescue!


...and while we're on the subject of Rescues...(see what I did there?!) Major is about to become the first ever Rescue Dog to call 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. home!!

We are shepherd people.
We've been lucky enough to live with two Shepherds, Bridget and Ella, during our 40+ years together.

I don't think we're up to another 80 lb. dog again, but whatever breed or mix, he/she will come from the shelter.

I'm workin' on it...;) :thumbsup:

Sorry to hear about Lollie. That's hard to take when you're just 8. It's not much better when you're 9 - 99. When my daughter was little her cat was killed the same week as 2 of our friends lost their dogs. I just remember her shaking her head and saying, "Oh, all these little souls..."

It's how we first learn about our responsibility to our animals. The pain of their passing is how we return some of the unwavering love & loyalty they've showed to us. We stick with them to the end.

Those of you who are friends with me on social media might know, but the beautiful girl we rescued in July died last week. It was a horrible shock, a freak accident, but we are heartbroken. She was an AMAZING girl, the kind you just don't get over. We're just heartbroken.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I've said before a d I'll say it again, having a special dog is perfect aside from the outliving them part. Hope the goods memories of her carry you through.
