I'm a day late for National Puppy Day, but this was Otto almost 8 years ago fresh off of being rescued. All paws and snout and love.

This is Maggie, the Norwegian Elkhound, in her glory in the Otter Creek Wilderness near Elkins, WV about 1996. A dog's dog, she merely tolerated us two-legged brutes.
The kind of dog you let out in the winter, and she falls asleep in a snow storm. Open up the door and call her, and a pile of snow gets up, shakes itself off and comes trotting back in as happy as can be!
My mom had an old breed spitz like that. Although she could come off as a high-maintenance dog, due to being so fluffy and all, actually she was still pretty outdoors. Since she had all that fur, she loved to just go out and flop down in the snow for hours, or lay out on the porch no matter how cold it was. We built her a sort of cave out of blankets and she loved it out there, no matter how cold it was. She often had to be bribed with dinner to come inside.
