My wife and I recently went to Asheville, NC for a few days and we took our dog Patti. I hadn't been there in over a decade, it's grown a fair bit but it is one of the most dog-friendly places around. We stayed at the Kimpton downtown--it's spendy, but the whole chain makes a point of being dog-friendly. They provide doggy beds and toys if you like, the employees tend to really fawn over the pups, and there's no extra charge for having a pet in your room.

We were also able to take Patti with us to all three restaurants we had dinner at--outdoors, of course, but with absolutely no hassle. The nicest place we went, Posana, even has a menu for dogs! We got Patti the entree (chicken and brown rice, below) and dessert, though we passed on the doggy "beer" as she'd had enough calories for the day (she cleaned both bowls as expected). And the human food was excellent.
