When I lived in Jensen Beach, Fl, the apartment/dumpy pad was a converted out building on an old pineapple plantation called Eden Lawn. Then it had reverted back to a jungle with the occasional pineapple plant. Talk about a nasty plant.

Right on the Indian River, a salt water, tidal, not really river that runs between Hutchison Island and the mainland.
I had a golden retriever that loved to chase schools of mullet at low tide. He got into it with a stingray. They hurt so bad!

Snakes, gators, possums, skunks, and bad ass trash pandas, we were careful at night. The swamps and lakes west of the plantation were full of gators. Hundreds of red eyeballs at night. It was a jungle out there.

It’s been quite a week for Duck. Monday, while hiking the local hill with my wife, he tangled with a rattlesnake. We think he might have accidentally stepped on it, but the snake was pissed.

Luckily, my wife had her phone. Our neighbors sprinted up the hill, I bailed from work and raced over, and got up the hill to meet them. Carrying an 80 lb retriever down hill, cross country, was not fun. We’ve got great neighbors, and Duck has many loyal friends.

Local vet had anti venom, started about an hour after the bite. They don’t do overnight care, and this was going downhill fast. In a couple hours Duck was in real trouble and we were headed for Dove Lewis ICU in Portland, about 1-1/2 hours drive in afternoon traffic.

Dove Lewis is amazing. They have saved this dog before. (another story). I can’t thank these guys enough.

We got him back today, and Duck will be in slow mode for a week or two. We expect a full recovery and a long time with a terrible haircut.

A local suspect, Anna spotted this guy a few weeks ago on the trail.

We found three bite marks.

We won’t be doing this hike again until the weather cools.

If you live in snake country, consider a leash. Duck is always happy running ahead, like most dogs on an outing. We’ve been doing this hike several times a week in all weather for 17 years, with a long list of dogs. We’ve seen one other rattler in 17 years. Until this summer, and now there’s way more of the nasty critters.

If you hike with your dog, consider what the plan might be if your dog gets in trouble. Broken limbs, hear exhaustion, porcupine, skunks, snakes, cougar, bears. We’ve got em. Having a first aid kit and harness with a handle would have been great. Within a few minutes of showing symptoms, Duck wasn’t walking of even standing up.

And one last thought: pet health insurance. Name a dream bass, this would have bought it.

We are so happy to get Duck home and on the road to recovery.

It’s been exactly a week since the rattlesnake bites. Duck is so much better, with a steady stream of visitors coming to love him up and bring treats and toys. This dog has a lot of friends.

A little R&R on the dog couch. This side looks normal. His face isn’t swollen at all. He’s sleeping, eating, and wishing he could go further, but he gets tired pretty quick.

Check out how much better this side looks! That’s one bite mark. The dark lines are pen marks where the vets outlined swelling and discoloration. A couple more bites on the upper inside of this leg. He has come a long way from the worst of it.

He must have stepped on the snake.

We are going to be resting and watching World Cup for the foreseeable.
