Shure sm57 question.

Right, they sound different. SM57s sound like junk, compared to a Beta87a. SM 57s sound like junk, compared to a PR22. The point I was trying to make is if the OP is going to PURCHASE a mic, he shou;d probably purchase a MORE USEFUL mic than a CRAPPY SM57 (sorry, but ALL they've EVER been [even] okay at is micing a guitar amp or a snare drum.). That's all I'm trying to get at. Shure's dynamic microphones have been outdone by a LEAP; not a little.
Look at the response curve of a PR20 compared to a SM57.
Buncha Shure fanbois... I've been using Shure mics as long as most of you for all the same reasons. I used to love my 58. Guess what? I'll never buy another one.

Whatever. It's all in the ear of the beholder. 57's work just fine for me for a wide spectrum of applications. YMMV and whatever blows your skirt up. Still love by Beta87a, Don't get me wrong. The Heil is just the clearest sounding mic I've ever used and the proximity effect is nearly nonexistent. For my $100.00, the Heil wins.
Really? Both are -10dB at 50 hz, and the 1 or 2 dB bump between 120 and 200 hz on the PR20 is pretty much inconsequential.

I guess the word hasn't gotten out to all the A-list fanbois who use Shure mics (particularly the SM58) on stage. In a live gig situation, no one is going to hear the difference between a PR20 and and SM58. One of the best hand-helds I've heard is my Shure KSM9. While I use mostly Shure mics (SM57, SM58, Beta 57A, Beta 58A, Beta 87C), I also have quite a few Rode, Audix and AKG mics.
I'm beginning to wonder whether YOU hear a difference, Munjibunga. Do yourself a service and listen to both the 57 and the PR20 for yourself. Maybe THEN you'll have something to base an opinion on.

The SM57 is like a Fender P, it will get the job done. I carry an old Audio-Technica Pro 3L that sounds to me like it has better bottom but the 57 will do a fine job in spite of the paper graphs.

So I'm sure the OP needs another opinion on this like he needs another can of shave cream, but I just wanted to chime in and give you all a heads up that there is a great TB'er selling an Audix D4 for a great price in the "FS: Other (non-bass-related)" section.
It's a dynamic mic that's made to pick up low frequency sounds. How's this for a response:
If you don't want to DI, this looks like an attractive option.
P.S. I know the seller of that mic is a good guy because I just bought a different mic in the same thread from him.

I thank every one for taking the time to help inform me! I have a lot more options than I thought I would. And thankfully time is on my side for making a choice. So I will try what I can get ahold of and make a decision.

Fuzzy - just my 2 cents. The 57 is a great all around universal work horse mic that you can't go wrong with. I use one quite often on my B15 since I don't have a dedicated bass amp mic and it sounds really good. It's a safe investment because it is versatile and you can mic just about anything with one in a live gig setting. If I had to take just one mic to a gig that might have to do duty on vocals, guitar, drums, or bass- I'd take a 57.

Use whatever mic you want, I could give a... well, you know. All you did with your condescension is make it highly unlikely that I will ever try your favorite $100 microphone.

Like anything, the 57 will work most of the time in a pinch. The way these threads always seem to go is 9 bass players say the SVT is greatest bass amp of all time, and one bass player says it's crap and a Hartke kickback gives them the ulimate tone over Ampeg, TecAmp, MarkBass, etc Haven't we all noticed this by now guys?
For the record, I have "read" many positive comments on the Heil mics, have heard my share of bashing by "professional = they did awesome live mixes" sound men pointing out much better mics that the common Shures everyone defaults to. ( I own a Beta 57 works fine for my needs.) Also, I have seen Craig S perform, and the man plays great bass and has an INCREDIBLE voice, so I have the feeling over the years he's used many a mic at least for vocals meets versatility needs. I would try everything you can that meets your price point, and like everyone, you'll buy it and sell if for something else, the NEXT best flavor, or just that "other flavor of good" : )

I respect the opionens that EVERY one gave! I have more options for a $100 dollar mic than i ever thought i would. And i have heard real world advice from true gigging musicians of wich i am not one!
