I have an opportunity to buy a G&L JB in silver flake. I love it, but as I've never had such a garish bass I'm wondering if I'll regret the purchase later.

I'm curious what you guys think of flake basses, if I want to resell will it be an issue? Will it clash with the guitarist's ego?

Seriously, my usual go-to is gloss black, but I'm bored with that. Would you go silver flake or something more mundane? Why?

Thanks.

It really depends on what kind of music one plays, I think.

I’m currently spending most of my time in a 21 piece horn band. It’s not about me. Flakes would be weird in that context, I think.
I would think gold flake would be appropriate for that!

Btw, I went for it. Order placed, pics when it arrives. Thanks, buds!

Than I painted my Stingray with orange and gold flake too...

If you already have sparkly basses and don’t feel like a mirror ball whilst playing, then go for it.

If your color choices tend to be less poppy, then pass. I had one gold flake guitar, and it always felt weird to hold.

Or just play a bass you already own and like and save the money.

I love flake finishes. I have three Stingrays with them. Then again, I many situations, I am determined to NOT be in the background in terms of stage presence or sound, and that includes a wireless that allows me to interact with both the musicians onstage, and occasionally people in the audience. In many situations, I am going to command attention and my instrument choices with whatever finishes, confirms that.

But buy what you like, no matter what kind of performer you are.
