Silverburst Thunderbird

If anybody cares to know, I called Gibson in Nashville last night and the guy I talked to told me that the black hardware is scarce, but then I asked him if they were done making them and he said "no, Musiciansfriend is probably out of them".

Which made me happy because I REALLY want one.

My daughter is 14 years old and you know kids that age don't think anything their parents do or have is cool. I was messing around with the silverburst last night and she came upstairs for something. She took one look at it and said "Dad that is one sexy guitar!". :bassist:

Gunner

Damn. I miss mine already. I picked up a std. Epi T-bird recently, got to compare them again; The Silverburst is the better sounding bass ( to my ears)!

The neck through design is definitely a step in the right direction. Moonshine :bassist:

You got that right...

I find myself reluctant because of the active electronics... I really like passive.

The active electronics are a roll on/roll off setup, the bass can be run entirely in passive mode if desired. My preferred setting is with the treble boosted just a tic, the bass a little more so...not dimed by any means. The bass allows a lot of boost if desired; with a quality amp, it's not necessary. But just like an extra 100 hp in a car, nice to know it's there, if you need it.

I too am brand new here, and I too got the fever for a Silverburst bass.
I have been putting in some time & effort into discovery with this sucker.
Little back story, I saw the Silverburst on MusiciansFriend when it was released, and all of a sudden one day I saw a different picture of the Silverburst TBird w/ the chrome p/u & black p/guard. I was on the horn with mf right away!
They told me that they "couldn't explain the picture" LOL, because the one they carry DOESN'T look like that! Low & behold, the picture was GONE the following day.
I have scoured the web since & recently landed on a picture of this fabled bass (FINALLY!) on Gibson's website (not even Epi's) so i dug deeper again.
I will share my findings:
As far as I know, and it seems you guys have established, their are 2 diff't Epi Silverburst TBirds.
-Musiciansfriend carries & sells the "base" model, so-to-speak.
the one with the un-covered p/u & white p/guard. Your standard run o' the mill Epi TBird.
-THE OTHER is the Ltd Edition one, carried by approved Epi retailers.
So I took the road of contacting my local retailer, and he provided with me with this info.
(*accuracy TBD)
-This bass is brand spankin' new. So new that Epi doesn't list on their website, only @ Gibson's (I disagree with his reason, I think it's listed @ Gibson b/c it's a Ltd Edition, but...) His vendor assured him they are coming around sooner then later & he was going to get back to me on the basses "transit time."

So my acessment is the bass is GOING to be out there to be had, obv. Likely in 2010. Perhaps MF will pick up a handful of them ala the Gibson Guitar of the week models, but it's definitely something that you can visit w/ a local "approved" retailer and hope they do the dirty work for you.

Sorry to be long winded on my 1st post. But I do hope this info helps out, even a lil.
Thanks guys!

This bass is probably just a gleam in someone's eye in a factory in Nunn Dunn China right now. The last new 'bird from Epi was the pro, with debuted (sp?) at the NAMM show last year, models didn't hit the market until late June/early July. So don't get toooo frothing at the mouth just yet. Spot shortages and long start ups are common for instruments made in Asia...especially popular ones, which the silverburst/chrome promises to be.

Epi must be taking a page from Rickenbacker: long waits make the heart grow fonder...

I got one by contacting the Musicians Friend clearance outlet in Kansas City. When I called the outlet store directly the guy I spoke with looked it up in the computer and he told me that they had two in their warehouse and he gave me the item number. Since I didn't want to drive two hours to Kansas City I called the online toll free number for Musicians Friend and gave the lady the item number and two days later I received chromed out silverburst Epi Thunderbird. When I saw so many guys on here wanting one I called back last Friday to see if they still had the other one and they told me they were out of stock. I tend to think since it was a "limited edition" and I got one from the clearance outlet that maybe this is all that will be made but I don't know for sure.

The first ones hit retailers early this year (march/april), so maybe they were a "market test" or maybe it really it is a done deal. I wanted one immediately based on looks alone and I play it as much as my gibson birds-> maybe more because it suits alot of modern rock songs well (e.g. it nails RATM "killing in the name of" even in drop d). Sometimes I think i like the way gibson/epi plays with ya head mon... sort of a wierd vib like the 80's/90's fender japan offerings. i'm pissed but i buy anyways. wierd

Hey Slappadabassa,
glad i checked out your band Stalking The Ground. very talented- great originals-bet you-all do a mean "digital bath" cover.. I think your bird will be heard... My silver-burst worked great for RATM "killing in the name of"

Hey Gaffster,
I appreciate that my friend. Not too many folks go the distance to find out where random forum dude is "coming from". But thanks a mill. Stalk the Ground was A LOOOOOT of fun and Obv Deftones were a big,big influence on us.
I KNOW this T-Bird would go the miles for my new project, and having a Silverburst would make it that much sweeter (it is my all time favorite finish).
Im still digging up the goods, and I will defnitely keep all the good folks here informed on my findings.
Stay tuned...

Thanks to Moonshine, my much anticipated silverburst 'bird was waiting for me when I got home from work. It is dark, deep, and beautiful! The neck and pickups need a little adjusting, and the action is a bit high......but man I can't wait to push this thing full tilt through my rig!
