Simple headphone unit

I'm looking into a simple unit to practice using headphones with. It doesn't need to have anything fancy at all, just a volume knob, place t plug headphones and and input. A simple EQ wouldn't hurt but it's not that important. I figure the recording equipment people are a little more familiar with headphone type things so...

Ideally it would fairly transparent. And cheap but hey, throw what ya got at me. I guess what I'm looking for is a headphone amp but I know theres different sorts of headphone related units out there that aren't directly labeled for that purpose.

I'd check out the Presonus HP4.

But if your wanting something nice and cheap, then there is the behringer HA400 or MA400

Not cheap, but I firmly believe you can't do any better sound- and transparency-wise:

cafe' walter headphone amp.

You can buy 'em at Bass NW...

Google for "cafe' walter" & you'll get walter's website.

Great unit, ultra transparent; the HA-1A runs on two 9v batts or AC adapter.

Also, I've both emailed (several times) and met (once) with walter and he is a super-nice guy, very generous with his knowledge.

If you can find one, I suggest the Raven Labs PHA-1. Best investment I've ever made.

I've used the Pocket Rock-it Pro for bass for several years. It's about $60 or so, comes complete with headphone. Uses 1 9volt battery which last for many, many hours. Has very simple eq, input for CD or ipod type thing so you can play along. Very small. I guess I should be a salesperson for these things but... it's no frills, simple and works.

If you want more flexibility, take a look at the Phil Jones Bass Buddy. Headphone amp, preamp, 10 watt amp, DI, 5 band EQ, and compressor all in one very small package.

I'll list the 4 things that I have used or currently using in order of costs and simplicity.
Simple and inexpensive = The Dragonfly (Bass Stethiscope)
Simiple, lots of effects, and not too expensive = Pandora 2B or 3B
Simple, Transparent, and relatively low $ = Cafe Walter
Simple, Transparent, multi-functional, and expensive $ = PJB Bass Buddy

i just have a 5m male-female 3.5mm jack lead wrapped around my normal lead, and then plug it into the line out on my amp, and headphones on my end, and easy as that i've got myself in my headphones, so i can hear myself fantastically clear, as well as the band breaking through.
