simple: maple or rosewood fretboard and why? please

In general terms: a rosewood fingerboard yields a mellower rounder tone and a maple board will be brighter. If you do a search you will find a comparison that Dan Atkinson did. The result was veeerry subtle but there to my ears.

Any tonal differences would be negligible at best. Just get the one that appeals to you visually.
I am a confused bassist!!! I like light and dark wood necks. My (stolen) Fender was a 1978 with maple neck. My present one has rosewood. Both are excellent. It is always your own personal choice.

depends on your level of expertise. If you dont want people freely observing your technique and youre a light skinned individual, go maple. whereas if youre of a darker persuasion but still shy about your fingering get the rosewood. People cant see my bastardized style against that maple background. Helps me get out of my own way. Something about a 1 pc. maple neck on a fender just makes me randy. The new Fenders have a maple fingerboard cap if Im not mistaken.

I like rosewood for looks, I like maple for a poorly lit stage where I struggle to see where I am on the fretboard.
But thats me........

Satan grew maple in Hades for my 1 pc. early 70's P-bass necks. What is this fingerboard thing youre speaking of?

maple boards have sealed & finished fingerboards (the standard (MIM) has a flat finish and the american standard a gloss one). i like the feel of gloss finished fingerboards so that might also be a consideration.
personally, although some people don't seem to think so, i prefer the sound of a maple board neck (especially a one piece maple neck), but it's not a huge difference in tone, so IMO, appearance and feel should be your biggest concerns.

Really, the OP needs to learn to use the search function (although BurningSkies was kind enough to do the work already). Either that, or the mods need to come up with a something that automatically nukes the account of anyone trying to post such questions.
For me, the difference in tone between the two is neglibible. When you are talking about playing either one in a band situation mixed with other instruments in a club or something, ain't NOBODY gonna be able to tell a difference in tone or sound.
So, it's up to feel as far as I'm concerned, and I go back and forth. For years I insisted on rosewood only. I thought maple looked and felt cheap and the only electric instrument I liked with maple was a Telecaster (guitar, not bass.)
A few years ago I totally changed my mind and came to love maple. But I still like both and the fingerboard composition of woods isn't something I take heavily into consideration when I'm looking at basses. I kind of like to have one of each, but these days I'm moving more back towards rosewood, again just based on feel.
So, it's up to feel as far as I'm concerned, and I go back and forth. For years I insisted on rosewood only. I thought maple looked and felt cheap and the only electric instrument I liked with maple was a Telecaster (guitar, not bass.)
