Singer has pitch issues — fire the drummer?

what about this guy? He appears about halfway in. Not only does he not know how to do the proper bass line for Gold Dust Woman, but his singing !! and he's done a whole series of these "lessons"....eeeeeek. No amount of voice lessons could save this guy

Yeah, this guy's vids are horrific. Whenever I am searching YouTube for bass instructional videos on specific songs i wish that there were a way to block him. Just seeing his thumbnails annoys me.

Luckily, there are quite a number of very helpful Youtubers available, including our own @TJH3113 and @Todd Hamby. Both are excellent and great resources for learning the song correctly.

If you are using vox to mark whereabouts in a song, that is even worse.
Teach a count or measure.
Waaay more useful.
I really dont see what that video guy achieves..nothing is of any use.

Having said that I'm often given a 'chart' with lyrics and chords over them... so vocals 'work' this way but I'll write my own rather than have try and follow them.

I also have used Constantine Isslamow, a Canadian, for a lot of stuff. very useful. sometimes attaches tabs with it. I've only had issue with one song with him, which I actually messaged him about, and he agreed and then put up a new vid!! :_)

I think teaching listening skills is also very useful, and something to be addressed after you've gotten the basics of counting. Counting is a low bar. Soooooo many people I encounter in music situations suffer for a lack of listening. It is often one of the next-level measures separating the great from the average.

That gets the song 'played'. .and if your ear isn't good enough, at least you make sense of it with the correct notes/chords in sequence.
If you want to play by ear, your ear needs to be good enough and that isn't a given.
If you dont know what a minor 3rd is, you can't play by ear unless you have great pitch..in which case all bets are off because that is another level.
But even hearing a change also means you got to know where it is.
If you have to play 9 measures and change, you are looking for a cue and counting it is that cue.

Yes, he's good. Greg Fairweather, ebassguitar, and Coversolutions are quite helpful as well, and they usually have both music and tab. There are some others like florianbass who have been usefull too.

All tools that only take you so far. The point I was making is that not enough attention is paid early on to things like deep listening, and that sets a player up with limitations to how far they can advance until they add that to their toolbox. I have it from experience that trying to teach someone with intermediate skill that they need to listen closely to the full ensemble is a very difficult hurdle. Better to start getting them listening from the very beginning, unless you want them stuck later on.
