Yes the malt would have been dried with either peat or wood what ever was more common I that area.I gave my bottle of Corryvreckan to a friend who REALLY appreciated it, and am enjoying my retreat to the Speysides. Tell me if you know, before natural gas and fuel oil, were all scotches peated? Just wondering...
I just watched a documentary on the Islay distilleries. Love the traditional methods and local resources. Must be good stuff.
Try to find a bottle of Balcones Brimstone, fair warning its intense.
One of my favorite combinations, Corryvreckan in a Glencairn.
Speaking of which, there's one now.

The bottle of Oban Distiller's Edition I ordered for my father-in-law's 80th birthday arrived today. This is a great bottle, and I think he'll really enjoy it.
So I was asked for gift recommendations for me from a relative. I was thinking of suggesting this. Yeah, its nice looking, would look great behind the bar.
But my only lesser significance question is, just how accurate is it? Thoughts? Thanks!

I wonder if we could take a map like that one and splash our usernames in our respective favorite palettes. I'll be hangin' in the very top left, if anyone wants to visit 
I'd definitely be on well into the top third, maybe a little to the right of center. Somewhat surprisingly but making sense, in my quest to learn I've settled in on Talisker 10 as my main, always around go-to. I'm seeing about what my next 4 or 5 bottles may be just based on that if it's very accurate.
Interesting, my standard (the Scotch I compare all others too is Lagivullen 16, followed by Caol Illa 12 and Laphroag 18. I also enjoy Talisker 10, Bowmore Legend (a steal if you can find it but apparently not available in the States), Laphroag Select, Quarter Cask, Ardberg An Ona, and Ugedall need to try Corryvekan again after seeing this chart. The Islays that don't impress me are Laphroag 10, to medicinal tasting, Ardberg 10 which I just don't find in the same class with the other excellent drinks in it's price range.
Excellent! I like all of them, but the ones I love best are right in the middle between smokey and delicate on the vertical, but mostly over towards the rich side on the horizontal..
I've had about 18 of the whiskies listed, and they look pretty close to me. However, taste can be so subjective that I'm sure we might all tweak the locations a bit to reflect our own experiences. The one thing that seems a bit hard to chart is the sweetness that some of the port- or sherry-finished whiskies exhibit. Generally, though, I think it's a great guide.
I'd put Lag 16 past the Corry on peat for sure. After getting into the Ardbeg, the Lag tastes unbalanced to me.
I still roll primarily with the Laphroaig Cask Strength 10, and most of the other islays fall short for me. Guess that means top-leftish for me!
One of my near term goals is to give the Lagavulin 16 another run. I've tried it numerous times and have yet to find the magic in it, but am resolved to give it another go.

FWIW, IMHO, the Lagavulin Quarter-Cask is a bit easier on the palette if you might be interested to try it.
