Single Malt Scotch!

I have a bottle of Springbank 15 sitting in my cabinet at home, unopened. I'm enjoying the Arran I previously mentioned so much that I'm working my way through that bottle (probably faster than is healthy for my wallet, in the long run) before I start anything else. Once I decided to try it neat instead of with water, I fell in. It's good.
Man, I couldn't just single out one bottle and only drink that one. That'd be torture for me... no matter how good it was. I like to move around so each bottle lasts longer and I get more variety.

Also, IMHO, I like the way a touch of water helps... well... sorta separate and enhance the details of the flavor. Maybe you were using too much? Seriously, just a touch, or a light splash... like 1/2 or 1 teaspoon of water.

Quick question for anyone so inclined:

Which two out of the following three should I buy (for myself)?

Balvenie Scotch 12 Year Double Wood
Highland Park Scotch 12 Year
Macallan Scotch 12 Year

I've tasted and liked all three but haven't had them side by side. If you think all three are similarly "good", which two would give me the best range?

TIA.

Balvenie and Highland Park - one Speyside, one Orkney rather than two speysides. Slainte!

I went to UK for a few days and came home with a couple of whiskies more that I'm trying out at the moment:

- Bruichladdich 12 second edition (Islay Single Malt), 46%
- Glenmorangie "The Quinta Ruban" (Highland Single Malt), 46%

At least the latter is very likely going to be a new favorite of mine. Excellent aftertaste with quite some spiciness and smooth chocolate flavors, as also stated on the bottle. I bought it on Heathrow after trying it with my workmate. I wasn't planning to buy a second one but it was simply too nice to resist. At least for the price I got it for. :)

I bought the Bruichladdich in London in a liquor/wine shop after chatting with the salesman who recommended it. I have a Caol Ila too, and this reminds quite a bit of that one, but without the peatiness. Great one too, but definitely rougher in it's character and less sweet than the Glenmorangie. However being two totally different whiskies, you can't really compare them. I have a feeling that the Glenmorangie will get empty first.

There are quite a few Glemorangies out there, all probably very nice. On Monday I had a glass of the regular 10year old version, which was really nice too. However, this quinta ruban definitely has a more exciting taste. Recommended. :)

Two weeks to go before I head to the 'mothership'!

I'm primarily back for the last date on the AC/DC, Black Ice Tour, which is at Hampden Park, Glasgow, but I'll be spending some time in Campbeltown when I'm there, so I'll definitely be heading to the Springbank distillery and the fab new tasting room/whisky shop! All the current malt for tasting and a huge selection of rare whisky along with the full Cadenhead range. Not quite GAS, let's call it WAS!

I'll also have a wee look at the new Glengyle distillery - I've got some bottle of the first distilation maturing as I type - a box set of 5 due in 2014!

Just a pity that legally I can only bring one bottle of alcohol back to the US. I suppose it's going to be an illegal return then!:D

I want recommendations upon your return!!! :)

Okay, I have on more than one occassion unintentionally derailed a perfectly fine gear thread to mention how comparing different, but equally excellent gear is akin to comparing single malt scotches. So, I thought it might make some sense to set up this thread, and then just link to it whenever I (or others) get side tracked thinking about these fine spirits!

I will start by saying that I like a variety of single malts, and I appreciate almost all of them. But, the variation between different single malts is really quite astounding, and there are always particular products which will have greater appeal to a given individual. I tend to prefer the Islay malts, and Lagavulin 16 yr. is a constant stable in my liquor cabinet.

Laphroaig is an occassional deviation from Lagavulin, and I have found myself spending a lot of time with The Balvenie 12 yr. Doublewood of late. Other scotches that I generally have on hand include: Oban (gotta have a bottle of Oban in the house!), Talisker, Dalwhinnie, The Macallan, and I still have some Glenfiddich 18 yr. Ancient Reserve which I am tring to milk along for as long as I can.

I'm sure I'll have more to add as we go on, but perhaps this will get things going.

Discuss!

Tom.

God drinks Dalwhinnie and so do I. I'm also fond of Dalmore and Glenmorangie, so I guess that makes me a fan of the Highland Singles. I do like a Laphroaig on occasion, but the strong, peaty taste goes a long ways. I also like Highland Park when I can get it, which probably explains my fondness for Famous Grouse when "forced" to drink a blend.:p

It's going to be a bit Springbank-sided, although I might take the boat across to Arran and hit the distillery there; my wife loves their Baileys rival, called Arran Gold.

Stay tuned!

I've been taking orders but I'm max-ed out on what I'm 'comfortable' coming back with! I'm also planning a trip to ACG guitars so I need to makes sure I have some space in my allowance! LOL :D

It seems to me that pretty much all of the "Bailey's rivals" are better than Bailey's, which seems to have an artificial chemical aftertaste, as if they were supplementing the sugar sweetness with aspartame or saccharine, or some other bit of satanic ugliness.

An interesting thing about 'Arran Gold' is that because they produce a relatively small volume of the stuff it's not worth the distillery's time to invest in the necessary production equipment, so they send their whisky to the Bailey's plant in Ireland to have it mixed with the cream!

My wife says that Arran Gold is not as 'sickly sweet' as Baileys (she drinks that too I should add!). I wouldn't know; two terrible ways to ruin good whisky that both begin with the letter 'c': Cream and Coke! :D

I got a bottle of Bunnahabhain bottled by Binny's. 9 years old and cask strength. It's really potent but the flavor is much mellower than the other Islays I've had, Laphroaig and Bowmore. Binny's liquor in Chicago does independent bottlings often and it's fun to see what they've got. My sister gave me some dough for graduation and told me to buy a bottle with it, and this is what looked best to me.

Any big Bunnahabhain drinkers here? How are their standard bottlings?
