Single Malt Scotch!

A few islands north of Lagavulin, but I'd suggest some Talisker from the Isle of Sky. Not as 'medicinal' (for want of a better word) as Lagavulin, but nice and 'peppery'. You could go one island north of Islay and try some Isle of Jura too; simple when compared to the Lag' but flavorsome.

Favourites are: the non-filtered Caol Ila, the Sheep Dip (yes, it's a blend, but not a nasty one), and hiding at the back is a Glenmorangie Madeira Finish.

+1 I've been hitting some Talisker 18 of late, and it is one heck of a fine scotch. :cool:

That's one heck of a drop - Best Single Malt in the World a few years ago!

I've mate with a bottle who's promised me a drop when I get back to Glasgow! Now there's a friend for you!

For others: if you haven't tasted Talisker, go search it out; very similar to a few but different and peppery (IMHO)!

I've given up cigars, but my mates tell me it's a great 'cigar whisky' but I haven't had the chance to try that out!

Just back from my tour of the Springbank and Glengyle distilleries in Campbeltown. A great tour and I opted for sampling in the distilleries' tasting rooms at the end of the tour.

Attached is a picture of what we sampled (generous measures too)!

5yr old "Work in Progress" Kilkerran
15 yr old Springbank
11yr old Springbank finished in Madeira wood
10 yr old 100proof Longrow
Longrow CV (a blend of 7 y.o, 10 y.o and 17 y.o.)
10 yr old Longrow finished in Tokaji wood
7 yr old Longrow finished in Gaja Barolo
8 yr old Hazelburn (not shown)

Needless to say this afternoon is going to be lazy and fairly painless!

Here's a pic of the full tasting room selection: (most of the labels are that of Cadenhead, Scotland's oldest independent bottler of whisky and owned by the Mitchell family who also own both distilleries.)

My drinking and fishing (fly fishing and Scotch have a dual heritage) bud called me last night all excited about Auchentoshan "three wood". Sounds like he really liked it. Has anyone here tried it. I've been very satisfied with Glenmorange Lasanta of late myself.

Great trip: Springbank and Campbeltown are a wee bit off the beaten track for most folk, but it's such an 'original' distillery where all parts of the distilling process are done in situ that it is really worth the visit. It's fantastic walking the malting floors for example, which I believe is the only distillery in Scotland where you can do that and probably one of the last to still do their own malting.

I have a bottle on the way finally. Actually, the 18 was somewhat hard to find. Everybody locally was out of stock, and so were several distributors. Is this a limited run that comes and goes a lot?

Also, I happened to see a 175th anniversary one as well. Anyone know anything about that one?

I like Springbank. I had some at a bar about two months ago.

Back when I worked at Beltramo's, I tried many different bottlings from them. They were all pretty darn good -- even the younger ones. Full flavored, but not harsh. I've heard it's one of the best to visit. I'm envious.

Many, many thanks to Dave for hooking me up with a KILLER Longrow 14! Wow, what a scotch! Vic, Burke and I had a great time drinking some of it with Michael Tobias and his son, Daniel, at Summer NAMM. Thanks again, Dave! :hyper:
