Single Malt Scotch!

Well talkbass, thanks again for making my interest in this site make sense! First time in the general section, and this goldmine is what I find!

So, im only 22, and new to the world of scotch. But this is what I've found so far. I def enjoy single malts way more then blends, and while I can't get all the nuances of each brand I have discovered I enjoy Glenlivet. And chivas.

So again big up TB for giving me another excuse to not practice :D

I'll say Slainte! right now, but I'll have to raise the glass later when I'm not trying to work on managing high tech software development. :)

For me, for this auspicious occasion, I think I may dig out the Glendronach 1968 25yr. That is some mind-blowing scotch, my friend. At least for my prefs. :)

I've had all kinds of new stuff since last posting here.

The best bottle I've had so far is Laphroaig Quarter Cask. Right now I'm finishing up a bottle of Springbank 10, which I knew nothing about before buying, and I've really liked it.

Another bottle I loved was a Signatory bottling of Bunnahabhain cask strength. I like all kinds of different stuff and I'm especially looking forward to trying all the Islay malts. I'd love to get some Lagavulin but I feel like there is a whole lot of Scotch out there at under $50 that I want to get through before I start spending double that.

Speaking of expensive Islays, has anyone had any Port Ellen? I know they were demolished in the early 1980s but their malts sound like the bomb.

I never did report back on the cask-strength Lagavulin. It is spectacular, IMHO, though not necessarily what I expected. It is not as peaty as Lagavulin 16, and in fact is a good bit more crisp, and not as smokey. It does have gobs of flavor, though. I tried it straight, which did present excellent flavor, but a bit more bite. For the most part, I preferred it with a little bit of water, but I could see where some might prefer it straight.

I am very glad that I picked this up, and I will probably pick up another bottle. Good stuff! :hyper:

A while back when Springbank opened the Glen Gyle distillery in Campbeltown, I bought a set of 6 bottles, which are from the first spirit run back in 2004. The first 6 casks filled from this run had previously held Bourbon, Oloroso Sherry, Fino Sherry, Port , Rum and Madeira and as you might guess each cask will be used for one bottle. The whisky will be released in 2014 at the 10 years old mark, but to mark 5 years in the cask miniatures were filled and sent to everyone who had ordered the 6 bottle set.

Anyway, the distillery sent me these a few months back and I found out today that they had been 'intercepted' by our valiant Customs and Border protection department! Luckily (for me) rather than dispose of them (or keep them, which while it shouldn't happen I'm told does) they sent them back to the distillery, so I have my miniature samplers awaiting pick-up at the distillery in a couple of weeks when I'm back in Campbeltown for Xmas and New Year.

Guess what I'll be toasting 2010 in with!

Nothing to be ashamed of drinking Highland Park. That's a great dram. I've had the 12 and the 18 side by side at a bar and the 18 is pretty great. I've had bottles of the 12 year come and go. I really like the stuff.

I've been drinking single malts for many years and have had just about everything listed here (though I didn't read every page). I'm always facinated by the variety of flavor characteristics available amoungst the single malts.

I must confess to loving bourbon as well.

Either one will do just fine with a nice cigar! :D
