Just got a phone call from the nice folks at the Whisky Shop to tell me about something that may be of interest to anyone who's going to be in the Bay Area on Nov 10. There's a Signatory-Vintage hosted food-and-whisky pairing at the City Club.

I always try a different type of single malt. There's too many good ones to just have one favorite. Though I have bought Knockandoo more than once...but it takes a good 4-6 months to kill a bottle.

Serve stright up after it gets to basement temperature. No ice, no chaser. A good single malt stays single.

Hello scotch guys, I need some help here.

I am going to buy a colleague at work a bottle of his favorite scotch because he's leaving us. It's a Oban 14yo. Now we also want to get him some cigars, but as I don't smoke myself, I've got no idea what to get. So, do any of you know what cigar goes well with Oban? Thanks!

A good safe bet for a great cigar is a Padron 1964, or 1926. Any size.

If you can find them, try Illusione cigars. One of the best experiences I've ever had with tobacco is smoking an Illusione Holy Lance while listening to Wagner's music drama about the holy lance, Parsifal.

A buddy of mine stopped by tonight after his session at the DAC (Detroit Athletic Club) the bartender there knows he likes Scotch. Anyway he gave him four bottles so we just had a little testing.

1) Acstutshun three wood: OK, but a bit sweet for my taste

2) Bowmore Dawn a bit mediciney, not near as smooth as 12 or legend which are both cheaper

3) Bowmore Dusk: Mediciney and syrupy combined, not so good.

4) Caol Illa 18: A keeper, a bit richer and smoother than 12 which is a very good Scotch. Kind of less smokey than Lagivullen, and in the same class, very good stuff. Still a very good smokey, peaty, Islay Scotch.

Sounds like fun! Bowmore Darkest is my favorite of the Bowmores I have tried so far, though Legend is also nice.

If you recall, I had a bottle of Caol Ila 18 with us at Summer NAMM. That is, indeed, good stuff!

I thought you had the Caol Illa in a Distillers edition at NAMM? I've had the Bowmore in the Legend (my budget choice) and 12 and I like both, but Dawn and Dusk while costlier were not at impressive.

I have a few ounces left of my 15. I think I need a US postal address for the 18. That would be lovely. We can't get 10 year in Canada either now. Only Quarter Cask which is also lovely.

Had a very pleasant Springbank 18y.o. last night at a restaurant in D.C. called 'Againn', which means 'are you with us' in Gaelic. Great selection of malts, probably some of the best I've seen here in the US, but if anyone gets the chance of some of the 18y.o. it's well worth it IMHO. I'll be home in Campbeltown in a few weeks so I'll have to pick me up some!
