Single Malt Scotch!

Anyone else get into Glenrothes? I tried the 1994(16 year i believe) last year and loved it. Certainly falls into that "dangerously drinkable" category in my opinion, but still very flavorful. I bought my father a bottle of their select reserve this year for christmas and am looking forward to having a taste!
I did, got a little sampler pack of three. Liked them all, but not enough to be compelled to stock some.

Whisky shopping was fun, sadly there was no Laphroaig 18 or any Lagavulin.

I'm not complaining.

Now that right there is a fantastic trio! I've not tried that particular expression of Bowmore (I have a bottle of the Legend) but the Talisker and Highland Park are near the top of my favourites list. I'd not tried the Highland Park 18 until Christmas Eve when 'Santa' had the miniature I'd bought at the distillery in the summer. Oh my. I think I'm going to have to make a pilgrimage to the distillery every time I vist the parents.

Not alone at all! Laphroaig 10, Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg 10 and Bowmore Legend in my cupboard (amongst others).
When someone names your three favorites right in a row like that, you pay attention to the fourth unknown flavor.

Of the Bowmore lineup I've only tried the 12 so far, and liked it, but not enough to rank it with my favorites. How does the Legend compare with these others?

I think your summary of the 12 would apply to the Legend as well. It's good, but if you like the real strong, peaty, medicinal Islays it's not quite top tier.

Nice. I just finished off a bottle of this and really enjoyed it. Certainly not a beginners whisky though.
Agreed. I mainly got that one and the SB 15 because they're supposed to be good examples of Campbeltown scotches made the old fashioned way, which I've always wanted to have on my shelf.

To me, the Legend is a milder form of the 12... again, a bit less complex, but just darn tasty as an everyday kind of "clean/simple" drinker candidate, both for it's mild mannered nature as well as low price. As such, it's also a great starter scotch for someone dipping their toes in the single malt waters for the first time. I'd personally always have some on-hand. Sometimes a nice smooth clean fundamental drink just hits the spot. Great for sharing at parties too. Good quality but not anything you'd have to be too careful about who you share it with.

IMHO.

Along with the Bowmore Legend as a great "budget single malt", I'd also like to suggest Glengoyne 10. I don't see this one or their 17 around much but both are excellent drinks. The 10 is a bit more complex than Bowmore Legend but still smooth and while not a true peaty-smokey blend it has enough of that going on not to descend into the sweet end of the spectrum lie Mac 12 which I find a bit boring. The 17 is a great mid priced scotch and really has a lot going on. Again not quite as smokey as the Taliskers or Laphroigs but I find it's a great poor mans Mac 18 for a lot less money (around $55)
