Quebec gets good beer prices compared to other provinces but our liquor prices are horrible. I buy my scotch when I'm at my parents' in New-B. It's about 15% cheaper there.

Quebec gets good beer prices compared to other provinces but our liquor prices are horrible. I buy my scotch when I'm at my parents' in New-B. It's about 15% cheaper there.
Just discovered the Lagavulin 16 yr. old thanks to this thread, and it is now my favorite!
I am still fond of the Macallan 12 yr. old & cask strength varieties, but the Lagavulin has so much more complexity that it is, IMHO, in another league.
An old Balvenie DoubleWood made me realise just why some of my friends were whiskey lovers, up to then I just didn't get it. It was like wow, that is incredibly good. Since then I've generally picked up bottles in airports, all under £30, so nothing fancy. Highland Park and Laphroaig have been highlights. Will drill into this thread some though for Whisky ideas when I've got some spare cash.
I really like the Ardbeg's (10, Uigeadail and Corryvreckan) and Lagavulin (12 & 16) but Bowmore 12 has proven to be a better alternative when I want a lighter Islay over the Caol Ila 12, which I originally expected to like since it seems that most Islay fans like it. Good to give it a taste before buying a full bottle.

The Lagavullin 12 is pretty good, but it's usually about 10 bucks more than the 16 for some reason and not as good IMO.
I didn't care for the Lagavulin 12 at all the first time I tried it but when I was able to try it a few weeks back along with the 16 and actually liked it better at that occasion.
Last week I had 4 glasses in my 'gig Glencairn' glass, finishing the bottle of Lagavulin 16 the bartender is holding there (with some help from the customers) and am looking forward to my next date with the 12.
First bottle of Lagavulin 16 I bought for $40 - wish I could find it for that price all the time.
The 12 yo is cask strength, ~56-58% depending on the year. The 16 yo is 43%.
Never tried the 12 but I'd class the 16 as my favourite malt. One day I'd love to do a short break on Islay and take in all the distilleries. Back to Highland Park this summer.

Yup. I prefer my Lagavulin 16 neat, but with the 12, I find that a very tiny splash of water enhances the flavor and finish.
I'm curious as to whether anyone's tried [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], which is distilled on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia.
I had a chance to tour the distillery a couple of years ago, while visiting NS. The 10-year was tasty enough, but it seems to have a reputation for inconsistency (and, in early batches, soapiness
). At $75-80 CDN per bottle, it was definitely outclassed (IMHO), by a lot of the Scotches available here in the US.

I was at a cookout at a wealthy person's party property (small house on wooded land with a pond) last night. When he broke out the humidor, I knew it was safe to ask about single malt scotches. He just handed me a glass with about three shots in it and smiled. I sipped it for a long time and really really enjoyed it. I asked him what it was and he refilled my glass... it was a Macallan 25yr sherry cask. I love the Macallan sherry casks, and hadn't had a drink of the 25yr in a LONG time (currently sells for 650-700/bottle... WAY out of my price range). It was the perfect treat to cap off the night.

I just found this thread... howdy, scotchies! I'm an Islay man, through and through. My favorite 3 whiskys in the world are distilled less than 3 miles from each other: Lagavulin, Laphroaig, and Ardbeg. Yesterday (June 1) was world Ardbeg Day, and the missus and I bought a bottle of the Corryvreckan to celebrate.

There's nothing better for me to find at the bar than those three and it sure would be great to tour their distilleries someday.
Lately I had the fortune to find two bars lately that had Lagavulin 16 and one also had Laphroaig 10.
Power of suggestion has me thinking of having a touch of my dwindling bottle of Corryvreckan myself.

Seriously tho... this guy is amazing. He's one of the most wealthy and influential people in our area and is humble and generous at the same time. To talk to him, you'd have no idea what kind of power he commands. The band is playing a private party at that same location this Friday. I'm very much looking forward to it.
