I just received my M7 Thursday and have had a chance to take it for a spin. Longwinded review follows:
After doing some set up work (the B string was rattling way too much and it needed some intonation work), I tried it out at home before taking it live. A few thoughts:
- the tone choices are many. The passive tone control, the active eq with a variable mid sweep, the pickup selectors, this bass is like a Swiss Army Knife of tone! The active eq (especially the low and low-miss) when boosted adds a lot of gain, however, and if you're not careful, will overload your amp input. The pickup selection is interesting. The series hum bucker adds a lot of gain but it's a rather muddy sound, unless you roll off the low eq a bit. The center selection affects the outer coils and sounds like jazz pickup - the best sound of the bass, imho. The parallel selection left me cold - it was a bit sterile and you lose gain when selecting this. I am currently playing with one pickup set to series and one set to the jazz mode and I keep the eq flat.
- the neck is sweet - plays fast and is easy to get around. I was worried about the 35" scale - I've been playing a 34" Warwick and the last time I tried a 35" scale bass it hurt my hand to do a bit more stretching. This neck feels great and I do not have any strain in my hands.
- Live it cuts through like a knife. My Warwick feels great and sounds great but my bandmates always complain that it's too muddy. Not this bass! I had no trouble hearing my bass clearly.
All said and done, this is an amazing bass for the price. I'm glad I bought one!
