What tone are you going for? I like the Marcus Miller/ John Pena tone. Which is how I first found out about the Xotic basses. So if you are going for that and you like the Sire better than the Xotic then I might have to consider putting in an order one of these daysI have 7 great basses it would be hard to justify but just one more might not hurt....
I'm also after the Marcus Miller tone. The Sire VV7 gen 2 swamp ash / maple is the nearest I've got. Better than the Xotic which has a more woody tone. Having said that I have the Xotic jazz pickups so maybe the Lindy Fralins that they offer are more zingy. Was looking to buy a fender Marcus Miller but it weighed 10lb 6oz! What do you think of yours?
I don't own an Xotic bass yet. But I always wanted one but now that the vintage Sires are out I might go for one of those instead. Most of my basses are J style. I have a Moon JB5 an Atelier Z 5 string , A Modulus J 4 string, a souped up 74 Fender Jazz (all of them are very dear to me), and a few others. So I really should not even be thinking about another one.I'm also after the Marcus Miller tone. The Sire VV7 gen 2 swamp ash / maple is the nearest I've got. My Z sounds really close, yes. It has Nordstrand split coil pickups and a Bartolini NTBT preamp. But when I plug in my Fender it's clear that there is something extra there that the Z does not have. My Modulus actually get's closer and in some respects it sounds even better than the Fender. Buy yes in the end I know that I spend way to much time perfecting my gear and not enough time practicing.
