Slampegg Bee Pre X or Underground Accelerator?

Not trying to take away sales from Sushi but if you wait a month or so there will probably be several Slampeggs in the classifieds. I expect mine will be heading there once my HW one arrives. Probably a few space heaters as well. Used is a good option for anyone on the fence.
And hopefully followed by Underground Accelerators a month or 2 later once the hand wired version of those are available.

A typo... HW Hand Wired SlampeggX

@Ryan L. Yep...

So Slampegg vs PAx. At the risk of being branded heretical... To my ear the PAx tone stack is not very much like the F2B or Showman Amp it was modeled after. I am very familiar with those and I just don't hear the juice in the PAx. The SlampeggX though... I'm not real familiar with the B15 or B25B... but I can get some really nice tone from it. The HW Space Heater is also kind of a no briainer. Mine is for sale but only as I'll snag an HW Finally when those are available.

Note YMMV... My tube thing is about the electric juicy presence and sparkle with out getting harsh. I have other sources for distortion and rarely tap them.

So, I promise not to be trying to start a fire, but I'll say the Particle Accelerator & X variety are, from what I've read, based very much on the original diagram and component values. I've never owned a Showman, though, so can't say I have a direct comparison, and also, I'd never be able to make one anyway since the cabinet design & speaker selection are particular to that pairing, and of course the head had its own power amp design that can't be replicated without, well replicating a power amp.

But if I'm not mistaken, the F2B showed up in some other designs too, right? So its sound would be a bit different in each iteration given how it interacts with the later stages of amplification.

Call this an academic inquiry. Don't wanna argue, just curious how an F2B might be an F2B or might not be an F2B.

I've own many preamps based on the RCA tonestack Leo and George copped. also, had a Showman amp for a long time. The PAx just doesn't cop the same vibe as an original F2B or my current BmaxT... It is not an easy thing to pin down but... The F2B and BmaxT have a presence and low end heft I was not able to get from the PAx. I used settings I would use with the F2B or Showman and... just not there. The PAx is cool but... but falls short of the real thing IME... to be fair, I don't hate the PAx but I am more enamoured of other implementations of the RCA tone stack.

Salampegg X on the other hand I am enthralled with... Dr Wattson I am beginning to like ... it is really different for me ... in a good way.

I'll take it. Considering my first gig head was a GK MB200, that tells you what era I'm from (the never-lugged-a-tube-head one if not heh)!

It could be that that's what makes the PA an easy win for me. It's a sweetener that just does good things for my uses, esp placed after a Linden EQ.

That said, I've also got a Slampegg (original minitube) on another board (my most-gigged one these days, even), and its tone shaping abilities help me leap decades at a stomp or switch or turn. I'm no scholar here, but a lot of folks now have done a lot of a/b/c with other offerings, and it's held up effortlessly. Might be the one to start with from what I'm gleaning here.

Too late, I already started with a London Underground. :) But seriously, I also ordered a Slampegg (mini-tube) from a TB'er around the same time, however, he has dropped out of sight, and I haven't seen it. :rollno: Strange, because he had over 100 reviews, none of them negative. But I digress.

I've had a Terror Bass (2nd gen) for a couple of years or so, and I really like it. It sounds very much like what I want a bass amp to sound like. So I had been thinking about a London Underground, and later, an Underground Accelerator for some time. The Terror Bass is my gigging amp, and I have an old Acoustic B200 at church. The B200 isn't in any way a bad amplifier, but it sounds a lot better to me with the London Underground in front of it. The LU seems to have the same character in the mids as my Terror Bass. I haven't played an AD200B, but I'd like to. I'm still hoping the guy that I sent the money to for the Slampegg will come through, but we'll see.

Follow up with that TB dude that still has your pedal. Hopefully, some very weird snafu happened and that pedal will soon be in your hands!

Unfortunately, the Underground Accelerator doesn't have sound clips. The Slampegg sounds pretty good in the clips on the Sushi Box site. I'd like something that can do a low-intensity overdrive without a lot of highs. My Terror Bass does this pretty well, but I may be playing in an environment where I have to use in-ears.

What do you recommend?

Can't go wrong with either Sushi-Box depending on the tone your seeking.

For example, here's part of my chain of two pedalboards in the making:

Ampeg B15/B25 tone stack:
Compressor > Broughton Fliptop > Slampegg Pre (mini-tube)
The Slampegg really brings some warm/overhead to the Fliptop (settings are virtually identical).

Alembic F2B / Fender tone stack:
Compressor > Broughton Super Stack > Westinghouse > 2020S Lightning Boy transformer > Underground Accelerator (mini-tube) > 2020S Lightning Boy transformer > Particle Accelerator
The Sushi-Boxes accent the SuperStack. In this case, the Westinghouse brings more warmth/overhead, the Underground Accelerator adds some additional warmth & hair, and the Particle Accelerator adds even more hair. I can use one, two, or all three Sushi-Boxes for some tone stack layering.

Am I interested in the hand-wired versions of the UA / SP? Sure. But, for now, I am satisfied with the mini-tubes!

Well, that is a *heck* of a lot of tone-shaping! I’d like to hear it.

I’ve only played thru an SVT a couple of times, and I lean toward the B-15 sound more. And the Slampegg won’t shock the crap out of me when I touch the chassis like the B-15 I tried at Guitar Center.

I’ve been trying to get ahold of the guy I “bought” the Slampegg from, and following up with a moderator. Here’s hoping.

I hope this is true but I have seen many Sushi Box pedals being advertised for close to new pricing.
I get supply and demand but a warranty is nice too.

I definitely did not pay anywhere near new for mine in the classifieds, but know exactly what you are talking about. In general most of the Sushi stuff seems to hold value. I plan on listing mine for a reasonable price so that I can get it out the door a day or two from listing it. Mine is one of the first 4 with the mislabeled hi/lo switches.

Nathan will pretty much warranty it whether you are the original owner or the 7th owner.
I didn't see that in the FAQ's. Hey Nathan, how do you feel about adding:

"All Sushi Box pedals carry a full lifetime warranty for parts and labor regardless of the date of purchase or ownership"

I didn't think so...

I do not believe it is official policy, but if you check out the Sushi thread, he has been pretty consistent about supporting used pedals. There is a chance he might add it just because you said it.

Hey @Sushi Box FX , we need UA demos :bassist:
Geeze, not sure how I missed this thread a month ago. Updated demos has been on my to-do list for the last decade or so, I just have so much trouble finding the spare time I need. One of these days I'll figure out how to stop sleeping altogether and finally get things done.

I love selling pedals and I'm happy to do it, but this isn't my day job, I don't rely on pedal sales to pay my bills and put food on the table. If someone is selling one of my pedals used, buy it! You'll get something you want without waiting a month or two, you'll get it at a discount, and they'll get cash to buy something else. Sounds like a win-win to me ;)

Interesting feedback, I appreciate it. I'll freely admit I've never even seen an actual F-2B in person. The original Particle Accelerator is based on the schematics I found of the Bandmaster/Alembic and was not traced from an actual unit. So the circuit is only as accurate as whoever put up the one I based it on. That being said enough people like it that it being inaccurate to the original Alembic doesn't really bother me, and gives me more license to claim it as "original" :p

That's basically how I treat warranty repairs, yup. As long as any damage needing repair wasn't caused intentionally or maliciously, or by unreasonable accident (i.e. plugging a 36V power supply into it) or modification (the exception being a modification I performed or walked a competent customer through performing). I often ask that you cover shipping to get it to me, but that's about it. I cover parts and labor because parts aren't expensive and I enjoy doing this stuff, so I tend to undervalue my labor.

I've dealt with enough scummy companies that make you jump through hoops to get something fixed even if it wasn't my fault it broke, I don't want to join that list. I don't care if you're the first owner or the 12th, I don't care if you bought it yesterday or 10 years ago, if something is wrong I will take care of it. I don't expect normal use (defined as "plugging in and playing") to damage my pedals, so if something is legitimately wrong then it's my fault, not yours. Pedals shouldn't be disposable. Mine aren't the most expensive on the market but they're not cheap, you should be able to rely on them. I know it's not the most profitable way to run a business, but I'm okay with being a terrible businessman if it means I'm an okay human being.

I'll get that written up in some nice official sounding words and have @Sonicblaze help me add a "Returns and Repairs" section to the website sometime.
