I take it all in stride. Whether is “Play some Skynard!” or “Slappa Da Bass Mon” or anything else the crowd yells. In most cases they are just trying to be funny. I usually say “Write your requests on a 20 dollar bill and drop it in the tip jar and we’ll play it in the 4th set”. (we only play 3). Believe it or not people actually do it sometimes.

When I saw "I Love You Man" I felt like they owed me royalties. Paul Rudd was essentially playing my life's story. The movie is funny, the scene is funny, the line is funny.

That's my opinion.

I've also run bowling centers and Kingpin is NOT FUNNY. It's stupid. I'm a distance runner and when a car slows down to yell, "Run Forrest, Run!" that is also stupid.

I don’t get the “sloppin’ da bay-ess, mon” hate. It is one of the only mainstream pop culture references to our profession. It is certainly the most recent, and most popular.

Are we suggesting that laypeople should be able to connect with us in our own vernacular? Are we only going to respect strangers if they can talk knowledgeably about ohms and watts?

I think they’re just trying to reach out and connect to us, the same as we would do if we were introduced to someone in a profession that had a signature scene associated with it.

I’ve seen the movie; I’ve seen the scene. When I am greeted with it, I smile, acknowledge the attempt to relate, and quote the next line in the scene.

Agreed. The things that trigger some folks are hilarious.

I don't think I've had someone say that to me and if I did, it didn't leave a mark.

Unfortunately, I’ve found that usually when people call out for Skynard, they’re being 100% genuine and aren’t trying to look like the moron they are. It’s one of the many sad realities that comes with gigging in a cover band. Taking it in stride and with a smile is the way to go. I can always vent on TB about it afterwards

In all honesty, I have no idea what movie it comes from, or if I've seen it. And I've never heard anyone mention it anywhere but on Talkbass, ever.

I've never heard anyone say it and the only references I've seen have been on Talkbass.

Just be grateful that they have acknowledged that you play bass, most non musicians I have met think that I play guitar, to them it looks like a guitar so it must be one

I only ever had that shouted at me once. It was by a very drunk woman. The people around her seemed embarrassed. That felt good.

To make matters worse (better?), the same woman had the best outburst I’ve ever witnessed. During the next bands set (the band was a guitar and cello duo), she made her way to the front of the stage, stood in front of the cello player and screamed “BASS SOLO!!!!”

The entire audience and the band erupted with laughter! Sporting a blank expression, she was oblivious to the joke.

I can’t say I welcome hecklers, but on rare occasions, it works out for everyone.

Gotta smile and keep the show going imho. Doing anything else just risks offending someone who spent money and time to come out to see you. Lord knows after a number of beers I have said lame stuff.
