Slight overdrive

For live proposes I run a tech 21 gt2 and I use it with a boss LS2 in a+b mix mode with just a dry tone on the other loop. Lets me set the gt2 really aggressive but i can blend it with the ls2 so its not so crazy. In the studio ill actually run the gt2 on a separate track by running the dry 1/4" out of my sans amp RBI into the gt2 and that's nice because anywhere I think my tone is to plain or clean we can mix in some of the gt2

I have to say it, it probably wont apply much to the OP's inquiry though considering he would have to spend around $450 for this set up, but I am running a GK 1001 RB into a Neo 410 and my go to slight grit is the OBD3 running into the Darkglass B7K. It is really RATM grit like on the first album and on some of their later work. I love my OCD by fulltone, it is a wonderful drive pedal through my rig. That is my go to DIRT pedal. I also run the Marshal Guv'nor plus, which can get really gritty low drive tone as well. The Hardwire CM2 is good for the low drive sound too. Just my opinions.

John, that barbershop is a beautiful looking pedal! The demos sound really sweet, is it ok with bass, no bottom end suckage?

Luckily the one dealer in Australia is not far from work, hope they have stock!

there's no low end loss with the barbershop. I think that you'll love having one.

I just scored a Menatone Kar Krash, primarily a guitar O/D that supposedly mimcs trainwreck/comet amps. Whatever. This thing, set to low gain has the nicest, growly, touch sensitive overdrive I've ever heard. No low end loss.flexible 5 band eq, LOTS of gain on hand, though I used it in the low gain mode with gain at about 9:30... just awesome. Also very responsive to tone/volume adjustments. I may no longer need my Fat Boost v1 for the Ska tunes. Even the band commented on the clarity and nicely aggressive bass sound.

Not cheap or plentiful, but ridiculously good sounding!

Tried the barbershop..

Bought the barbershop, it was exactly what I was looking for, it was a toss up if I pick up the For Eyes fuzz as well, what a great sounding fuzz.

IMHO the best low gain OD is the Vodoo Lab Sparkle Drive...

It is a modified TS808 circuit...but it has a clean blend built in......The clean control blends back in a boosted direct signal, thus restoring the attack and feel which is lost in a highly compressed overdrive circuit.

The Pedal utilizes the same concept as layering two amps, one clean and the other saturated. Of course with the clean control turned down, you get a classic overdrive tone. All the way up, it provides a super transparent, 100% clean boost.

Great to read you found something that works for you.
The Barbershop is indeed a nice pedal. If you find out this is too much over the long term, look at a clean boost. They are the bass player's best friend. Xotic EC boost is great if you want EQ. HBE Bajo Mos is perfect for just clean boost.
Another option is the sparkle drive which gives you clean boost and two tube screamers EQ.

I gave the barbershop a run last night, if anything I was worried it wasn't enough.
Then I turned it off and I realised what wasn't there. wow, the pedal can give such a glorious fat subtle girth to the sound, very impressive.
The sag control is my favourite bit, I'm not sure this is a correct technical description, but it seems to really compress the attack of the notes, combined with some overdrive the notes become really chunky and soft.

yeah, that's the thing about the barbershop. when you turn it off you really miss it. it doesn't mess with your tone, just your dynamics. to me, it's the perfect pedal for making it sound like you've dialed in a tube amp into its sweet spot, and at any volume level. on top of that, I don't think that you can get a bad sound out of one.
