Umm actually brendan.. the drummer and the guitarist played their own instruments (and did so faily well) and the only time they were ever seen faking it, was when they were doing so very obviously.. now I am not a huge monkeys fan, they were mostly a look and a voice, but 2 of the 4 played their own instruments.. the 3rd only play tambourine and the 4th only ever sang anywa... lets get our facts straight.

i like slipknot too... unfortunately ross robinson's production doesn't do that band too much justice. you can barely (if at all) hear the bassist's lines unless the rest of the band lays out. same problem with tom araya from _slayer_. maybe next album they should try to record most of it (except maybe the guitar parts) digitally?

actually, they did and could. the first two albums, they could have but the music director for screen gems, don kirshner (yes, that one) wouldn't let them. before the show, peter tork, their bassist of record, was a classically-trained folk musician capable of playing several different instruments, michael nesmith was also doing the folk-rock thing before the tv show, micky dolenz was singing and playing guitar (yes, guitar) in a band in los angeles, and davy jones had a lot of experience performing in broadway musicals and had done an album on his own before the band.

on their third album headquarters, the show was on season hiatus, so they lobbied to get kirshner fired and played 95% of the instruments on the album, with their hand-picked 'producer' and chip douglas (former bassist with the turtles) playing some bass lines whenever peter was playing keyboards, since they were cutting most of the instrumental tracks live. after that, they'd play alongside studio musicians since they were either touring or doing the second season of the show.

live, it was just the four of them playing, with davy playing bass whenever peter had to play keyboards. the only 'outside' musicians they used live when they were a four-piece would be when they'd use the opening act to back each of them during their mid-concert solo spots. there's a great live document of them from this period out on Rhino called live 1967

when i saw them on the 1987 reunion tour they had session players on keyboards, bass and horns and a second drummer, but the three of them were playing instruments through the whole show.

great basslines on the whole classic monkees discography, especially on headquarters and pisces aquarious capricorn and jones ltd. from both peter tork and chip douglas.

nope. you're not wrong at all. in fact, you've got the right attitude toward bass - play what's necessary and don't use your bass as an extentsion/substitute for your pecker.

i dont mind them, coulnt tell ya if i liked his playing though, its drowned out but the 3 drummers.........

......who the hell has three drummers

....and yes i no two play percusion

...well not really percusion more like beer kegs but they play a damn good beer keg dont get me wrong

...whats a song were u can really hear the percusion cause i wanna hear what those crazy titanium drums and beer kegs sound like:D

james brown has frequently used three drummers. adam and the ants stopped at two.

don't forget that the group also has a keyboardist playing samples and a deejay scratching!
